"You just can't hate yourself into being better and you can't hate other people into it." - Dr Brene Brown
Shame is a complex emotion and some of us even feel shameful to be feeling shame. By popular demand, Dr BB reveals the difference between shame vs guilt, and other uncomfortable emotions based on the research by Dr Brene Brown.
According to Dr Brown, "Shame is the fear of being unworthy of love, connection and belonging, and the absence of love and condition and belonging as a human being, and there's always suffering."
Compare to guilt, shame, is a lot more damaging according to Brown, as it says "you are a bad person", and as a social species, "shame is death".
Dr BB advises that with the awareness of these different types of emotions when we are feeling them, and to talk about them, it helps to diminish the power of shame. Healthy guilt is to say to ourself: 'Yes, I made a terrible choice and hurt someone, but I'm not a bad person. It was a bad thing that I did, and I don't like to be that person, so I am going to fix it and make amends."
