McDonnell Distinguished University Professor; former chair of the Department of African American Studies at Princeton University; and former president of the American Academy of Religion. His most recent book is 2020’s Begin Again: James Baldwin’s America and Its Urgent Lessons for Our Own. He is also host of the History is Us podcast.
