COVID-19 has shown a variety of oral manifestations, often associated with general systemic symptoms of the virus.
1. Loss of Taste (Ageusia) and/or Smell (Anosmia): Many COVID-19 patients report partial or complete loss of taste, sometimes accompanied by alterations in taste (dysgeusia).
2. Oral Ulcers and Lesions: Patients frequently present with ulcers, aphthous-like lesions, or mucosal erosions, particularly on the tongue, palate, and buccal mucosa. Oral ulcers and lesions associated with COVID-19 can sometimes be accompanied by numbness or altered sensation (paresthesia) in the affected areas. This numbness may be linked to inflammation or nerve involvement due to the virus’s impact on the mucosal or submucosal tissues.
3. Xerostomia (Dry Mouth): Dehydration and reduced salivary gland function during COVID-19 can lead to dry mouth, which can exacerbate other oral symptoms. Some studies have also shown COVID to cause a state of increased salivation as well, leading to salivary changes in general having association while niether can be proven as specific.
4. Gingival Inflammation and Bleeding: Increased bleeding and inflammation of the gums, sometimes severe, have been reported, possibly linked to immune responses or systemic inflammation.
5. Herpetic-Like Lesions: COVID-19 may cause herpetic lesions or reactivation of the herpes simplex virus, manifesting as cold sores or other lesions around the oral cavity.
6. Swollen Tongue and Glossitis: Known as “COVID tongue,” some patients experience swelling, redness, and a burning sensation on the tongue, sometimes with a loss of papillae (smooth tongue).
7. Petechiae and Erythema: Small red or purple spots (petechiae) and generalized redness can appear on the oral mucosa, possibly due to viral-induced vascular inflammation.
