On this edition of Century: Racism and the Drug War. The International
Independent Expert Mechanism to Advance Racial Justice and Equality in
the context of Law Enforcement met for its fifth session March 24 and
25 at the UN in New York. They held two days of public in-person
consultations on systemic racism against Africans and people of
African descent in the enforcement of drug laws and policies. This
week we hear some highlights from day one of the Fifth Session
including remarks by Dr. Tracie Kesee, one of the co-moderators at
this session and an Expert Mechanism Expert; Trevor Velinor, the
retired Commissioner of the US Virgin Islands Police Department and a
board member of the Law Enforcement Action Partnership; and Ajeng
Larasati, Human Rights Lead at Harm Reduction International.
