The Outsider is the second most read francophone novel in the world. Albert Camus wrote it in 1942.
The story takes place in Alger, the capital of Algeria, when this country was a French colony. The hero, Meursault, is a young man working as a clerk. From the outside he seems to be just like you and me.
But by listening to him telling his story, we quickly understand that it’s not the case. Meursault appears to be completely emotionless. We are under the impression that he’s an outsider to his own life.
In this novel, Camus shows us the absurdity of human existence through his narrator’s eyes. I’m sure that this fascinating story will give you some food for thought!
