As we foster regional, corporate and social transformation toward a sustainable world, Silicon Valley stands at the epicenter of all three spheres of change. As a region, its local institutions are committed to adopting sustainable community design and practices. As home to some of the most influential technology companies on the planet, this is a community that can accelerate the greening of the international ICT sector. And as the innovation center of the digital world, Silicon Valley visionaries are uniquely positioned to launch a new generation of tools and services to facilitate our shift to sustainability. Marianna Grossman, the Executive Director of Sustainable Silicon Valley, has not only pursued the non-profit’s original multi-stakeholder mission to develop a regional environmental management system, but also has developed a number of programs that are bringing Silicon Valley’s best and brightest together addressing the technology industry’s current and potential contributions to sustainability in both its practices and its products and services. This conversation covers a lot of territory, including SSV’s work with NASA, regional initiatives, and corporate engagement in the global shift movement. The bottom line: we are counting on American ingenuity to invent the New American Dream – of a world in which our grandchildren will thrive.

One of the key drivers of this change is education, as exemplified in the programs and courses offered by the Regenerative Design Institute. Consider this half hour program to be your introductory course.

This program explores the relationship of human culture with the natural world, both through the lens of art and culture, and through the experience of education and on-the-ground-actions. Osprey Orielle Lake is founder of the Women’s Earth and Climate Caucus, a solution-based alliance fostering resilient communities and promoting a post-carbon economy and energy future, and is the author of the recently published book, Uprisings for the Earth: Reconnecting Culture with Nature. In this compelling conversation Osprey, who is also an accomplished sculptor, shares her early inspirations that led to her pioneering work on behalf of the natural world, argues that we must change our internal landscapes (our values and perceptions) before we can effectively address the external world, and offers many examples of evolutionary initiatives such as the growing legal movement to defend the Rights of Nature. She also describes the educational programs and political influence of the WECC, and suggests other resources and ways to engage in the growing transformation of culture. A common thread in Osprey’s work is the empowerment of women and the elevation of the feminine of as we re-establish our relationship with Mother Earth.

Now that we are beyond “the end of the old world” as signified by the December 21, 2012 winter solstice, it is time to accelerate the shift to a thriving world. In this first 2013 edition of Eco Evolution, the conversation with big picture expert and educator Vinit Allen reveals the primary components and character of the planet-wide movement and offers some specific “game changing” priorities, as well as plenty of examples of how we can all play our parts in the eco evolution of our species – once we are informed and empowered to take action. Getting the information out is key, as exemplified by Vinit’s Sustainable World Sourcebook and Spring of Sustainability online course with the Shift Network.
