Why Having Difficult Conversations Is Worth It

Go on any forum right now. Ask people which sentences they least like to hear in conversation. You will probably find famous among the first ten examples, “We need to talk.” Whether you hear this sentence at home or in the office, it never fails to give you a knot in your stomach.

You hate that sentence. It shows that a problem needs your attention as soon as possible. You are going to have a difficult conversation.

We fear difficult conversations for various reasons because they are uncomfortable and hurt feelings. They may escalate into arguments. As a result, we hope it will disappear if we avoid the subject altogether.

But whether in personal life or business, these conversations are unavoidable.

Here are some reasons you should embrace having difficult conversations:

    1. The problem never goes away, no matter how long you ignore it. Suppose you decide to ignore an infected wound on your arm. You can cover it up with a huge band-aid or hide it under clothing. Will that make it go away? No, you will still have a giant wound on your arm.

    • Eventually, you’ll deal with it. Having difficult conversations is similar. It makes you anxious and uncomfortable, but the problem does not go away when you ignore it. It goes away when you deal with it.

    1. You get to understand the other person’s point of view. We believe that whatever side we are on in a disagreement is right. Willingness to have a challenging conversation shows that you can open your mind to a different viewpoint than you may be used to.

    • You approach the conversation with the right attitude and listen to and validate the person you talk to. You come out of the encounter knowing more than you did when you went in. It helps you expand your worldview or make necessary improvements.

    1. You accept responsibility for your part in causing the problem. No problem is one-sided. When you are open to difficult conversations, you accept that you played a part in causing the issue.

    • The person you have the conversation with, your spouse or boss, or whoever can sense your humility and is more likely to be open and honest and accept responsibility for their part in the matter. Therefore, solutions appear faster.

    1. You get better at having those conversations. Difficult conversations are unavoidable. If you avoid one at home, you will meet one in the workplace. And you can’t run away all the time. The more difficult conversations you have, the better you get at having them.

    • Learn how to approach hard conversations. Learn how to diffuse tense situations. Your communication skills will improve. You will also be able to put yourself and the person you’re talking to at ease.

    1. It makes us have better relationships. No human relationship is full of laughs all the time, unless, of course, you’re running a comedy club. Always find the best way to put things out there hurting no one’s feelings.

    • When you do that successfully in personal relationships, you build stronger bonds. Even in complex and awkward situations, you learn to be yourself around your friends and partners.

Resentment festers when problems are in the dark. So talk things out. Dropping hints on its own is ineffective. You have more of an opportunity to solve a problem when you understand it. Difficult conversations make that possible. If you’re hesitating to have a difficult conversation, don’t allow fear to hold you back.

Once you learn to make the most of difficult conversations, you’ll wonder what you were so afraid of. Maintain your composure and talk. It may go your way, or it may not. In the end, though, the result will be worth the trouble.

Top 10 Differences Between Successful and Unsuccessful People

Have you ever wondered what makes your most successful friend so successful? What about your least successful friend? What’s their problem? What’s the difference between those that thrive and those that struggle?

There are several differences, and they’re quite obvious if one takes the time to look.

If you understand the differences, you can examine your own situation and gain insight into why you might not be as successful as you’d like to be.

See how successful people do things differently than unsuccessful people:

    1. Their lives are defined by their goals. Unsuccessful people’s lives are defined by their fears. Most people live their life in a way that avoids their fears. Successful people make decisions based on accomplishing their goals, not avoiding their fears.

  • They apply their time toward long-term objectives. Unsuccessful people are motivated by day-to-day concerns. The average person is only concerned with making it through the next week. Successful people take action each day that will provide benefits months, years, or decades in the future.

  • They seek success. Unsuccessful people seek comfort and base their decisions accordingly. A successful person moves toward success, whether the route is comfortable or not.

  • They take responsibility. Unsuccessful people have an endless list of excuses for their mediocrity. Successful people assume responsibility for everything that goes wrong in their lives. When you take responsibility, you have the power to change your situation. Blaming others is a form of powerlessness.

  • They continuously improve their results. A successful person wants to be better than they were yesterday. Average people maintain average results and are satisfied with this level of performance.

  • They read books. Unsuccessful people gravitate toward TV and other non-value-added forms of entertainment. Reading the right books is one of the most effective ways of boosting your knowledge. Would you rather learn something new or waste your time?

  • They are comfortable with failure. Successful people might not like failure, but they can deal with it. Average people avoid failure at all costs. This is similar to the previous point on fear. An inability to deal with the fear of failure is one of the things that makes unsuccessful people unsuccessful.

  • They have a plan for the day. It’s not possible to get the most from each day unless you have a plan for it. Average people wake up and let the day decide for them what might happen. If you don’t plan your day, you’re avoiding success.

  • They surround themselves with the right people. Successful people spend time with others that help them to become better. This could be a mentor, someone they could potentially do business deals with, or simply someone they believe has the right connections.

  • They have positive, effective habits. Good brushing and flossing habits lead to healthy teeth. Good exercise and diet habits lead to health and fitness. Good success habits lead to high levels of success. What do your habits lead you towards?

  • As you can see, there are clear-cut differences between successful and unsuccessful people. How many of these items can you identify with? What changes would you like to make?

Which one you decide to be is up to you. Are you committed to progress or comfort? Do you have a plan for your time that maximizes your effectiveness, or do you like to fly by the seat of your pants?

The choice between success and mediocrity is up to you.

11 Ways to Build Lasting Self-Esteem

Self-esteem is essentially the quality of being pleased with yourself. The opposite of having high self-esteem is loathing yourself, which is obviously a challenging way to live. Learning how to be happy with yourself can benefit you in every other aspect of your life. You’ll be a lot happier in general, too.

Learn to love yourself and raise your self-esteem with these tips:

    1. Demonstrate to yourself that you’re a good person by giving some of your spare time to a worthy cause. You’ll feel better about yourself than if you’d spent the same time watching a TV series marathon instead.

  • Do something each day that you’re good at. We feel competent and confident while doing something that we know we’re good at. Make a list of the things you know in your heart that you do well. Do at least one of them each day and notice how you feel.

  • Remind yourself of your successes daily. Spend a few minutes each day reviewing your successes. Include recent as well as successes from the past. You’ve done a lot of great things. Avoid forgetting about them.

  • Avoid comparing yourself to others. There’s always someone that does something better than you. Just remember that there are things you can do better than them, too.

  • Increase your knowledge or expertise. Constant improvement is a sure path to greater self-esteem. Keep improving yourself and your capabilities, and you’ll be more impressed with yourself. What do you want to become better at doing? What would you like to know more about?

  • Release yourself from your mistakes. Allow your mistakes from the past to fade away. You can do this by forgiving yourself and keeping your mind focused on what is happening in the present time.

    • You don’t know anyone that has never failed or made a mistake. This includes your closest friends and family members. You don’t hold their mistakes against them, so how can you hold them against yourself?

  • Stick to your values. When you fail to live up to your values, you won’t feel very good about yourself. Understand your values and live them each day.

  • Face a fear. Having too many fears can lessen the level of self-esteem we experience. Overcome a fear and you’ll be amazed with yourself. Start with a small fear and work your way up.

  • Avoid doing things just to please others. Going too far to please or impress others demonstrates to you that your own preferences, values, and happiness come in second place. Be considerate of others but strive to make yourself happy.

  • Be able to say “no”. The inability to say “no” to others shows that you give too much preference to others and too little to yourself. Show yourself that you matter by being able to refuse the requests of others when appropriate. You’ll receive more respect from others, too.

  • Define what you believe a good person should be. You can’t be happy with yourself if you don’t have a target to strive for. Understand what it will take to feel a high level of self-esteem. Each day, you can choose to be the type of person you described.
  •

Work on your self-esteem each day. It doesn’t sit at a constant level for most people. Good days, weeks, and months tends to raise it. Experiencing bad periods of time tends to reduce it.

A great start is to decide on your values and then use them as a guide as you make decisions throughout the day. This is the foundation of high, and lasting, self-esteem.

4 Genius Tips to Get More Done in the Morning

It's fun to stay in bed all morning. But that time you waste is always time you’ll regret losing. Instead, you can use your morning hours to set you up for a killer day. How you start your day is a key indicator of how it will unfold.

Being the most efficient version of yourself can also mean different things to different people.

Implement these four genius tips to get more done in the morning:

    1. Have a morning routine. Wake up at the same time every day. Avoid hitting the snooze button. When the alarm goes off, get out of bed before turning it off. Some do this by putting the alarm across the room, so they have to walk to it if they want it to stop.

    • If you can’t wake up early, you’re sleeping late. Clear a fixed sleeping time in your daily schedule. If your sleep time is from 9 pm to 5 am, waking up will be easy. Next, make your bed. This step is key. If you don’t get up and make your bed, you’ll sleep in.

    • Then go to the bathroom and splash some cold water on your face. It clears your morning fatigue. You could add a quick workout. Take a cool shower.

  • When you are hungry, it’s hard to focus, so you definitely cannot get things done.
  •

    • You will be perfectly awake and ready to take on the morning by now.

    1. Avoid getting distracted by your phone. You don’t want to keep receiving notifications or be distracted by social media. If your phone has the feature to freeze your apps, use it.

    • You can preset it so you can’t access specific applications before 8 am. Especially if you’re on vacation, you may get stuck in bed scrolling.

    • Before you know it, it will be afternoon already, and your morning will be gone. You might have a lot of things you need on your phone, but you also have other things you can do without your phone.

    • To get more work done, turn it off for short periods, perhaps 30 mins or 1 hour between every two hours, and work on other important things during that time.

    1. Do as much as you can the night before. To make the morning as simple as possible, pick out your clothes, pack your bag, and write your priorities for the next day. Be realistic with the time you need to get things done in the morning. Have a detailed list of things to do.

    • Write all you want to do, breaking them down into smaller tasks that you can quickly finish. Then, as you check them off your list, you will feel a sense of accomplishment and motivation to proceed.

    1. Have an accountability partner. Find a friend who is as excited about being more productive in the morning and a partner who has the same fundamental goals as you. Exchange your list of priorities with them.

    • Keep tabs on each other and force each other to perform your tasks. Reaching your goals together feels awesome.

It’s hard to do things when we don’t know why we’re doing them. Keep your goals in front of you always. Remove distractions so you can stay focused. Do things even when they’re hard. Staying productive is all about building momentum. The more stuff you get done, the more motivated you are to do more.

There are no shortcuts to success and productivity. But if you keep putting in the work, you’ll have a better chance of getting there.

The Five-Step Method of Starting Small to Improve Yourself

Are you looking to change your life but don’t know where to start? Don’t worry. You’re not alone. Many people feel overwhelmed when they think about making changes, especially if those changes are big and challenging. That’s why it’s important to start small.

Here, we’ll discuss the five-step method of starting small to improve yourself. By following these steps, you can make gradual progress towards your goals and eventually achieve them!

Here are five practical steps to help you start your self-improvement journey:

    1. Don’t change everything at once. Start with one small goal that you can easily achieve. For example, if your goal is to eat healthier, start by adding one new healthy food to your diet each week. Or, if you want to exercise more, commit to walking for 20 minutes every day.

    • Small goals are much easier to achieve than large ones, and they can help you build momentum.

    • If you try to change everything at once, you’re likely to get overwhelmed and give up. So start small and be patient with yourself. Remember that progress is more important than perfection.

    • Here are some useful tips to help you start small: Set realistic goals that you can achieve. You must only end up disappointed if you set big, overwhelming goals. Instead, set clear, targeted, realistic goals that you can achieve.

    • For example, don’t set a goal to make $1 million in a week. Although it’s not impossible, it’s more realistic to set a small monthly goal: “I will earn $2000 a month from my online writing business by August 2022.”

    • Setting specific, attainable goals is one of the best ways to improve yourself. If goals daunt you, you can set the goal and focus on the process instead.

    • For example, if you need to lose weight, forget about the number on the scale and focus on the actions you need to take every day to lose weight.

    • You will need to exercise often and eat healthy meals. Therefore, each day, you can set a goal to walk 10,000 steps and to eat one healthy meal.

    1. Make a plan of action and stick to it. It will help you stay focused and motivated. Write your goals and action steps, and then put them somewhere you’ll see them often. Make sure your plan is specific and realistic to follow through with it. Also, track your progress and celebrate your wins.

    • Break down your goal into smaller goals or action steps. It will make it seem more achievable, and you’ll be able to track your progress more easily.

    • Take action every day. Even if it’s just a small step, working towards your goal is more important than taking sporadic giant steps.

    1. Celebrate your wins. It will help you stay motivated and keep progressing towards your goal. Acknowledge even your smallest accomplishments and give yourself credit for your progress. Recognize that every step forward is a success, no matter how small it may seem.

    • Some ideas for celebrating your accomplishments: Buy yourself something new as a treat, such as a new pair of shoes, a new handbag, gaming equipment, or a new book. Take yourself out for a meal or to see a movie.

    • Do something you enjoy, such as taking a relaxing bath, playing your favorite sport, or going for a massage.

  • Tell your friends and family about your accomplishments and ask them to celebrate with you.
  •

    • Write about your success in a journal. It is a great way to reflect on your progress and stay motivated. You can also start a YouTube channel to document your journey. People like to watch others achieve their goals.

    1. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Everyone makes mistakes, and you’re bound to have setbacks along the way. What’s important is that you learn from your mistakes and keep going. Be patient with yourself and remember that progress takes time.

    • Forgive yourself. It is essential to move on from your mistakes. Do this by practicing self-compassion. It’s vital if you want to improve yourself.

    • Focus on the present. The past is in the past, and you can’t change it. All you can do is focus on the present moment and make the best of it.

    • Learn from your mistakes. Make sure you understand what went wrong to avoid making the same mistake again.

    • Let go of perfectionism. Accept that you’re human and that it’s okay to make mistakes. Perfectionism can be a massive obstacle on the road to self-improvement, so learn to let go of it.

    • Practice self-care. It is one of the most important things you can do for yourself. When you’re taking care of yourself, you’re more likely to be in a better frame of mind and better able to improve yourself.

    1. Be patient and keep working towards your goals, even when things get tough. It’s normal to have setbacks and feel discouraged. But don’t give up on yourself. Be patient, and keep working towards your goal, no matter how long it takes. Remember that progress is more important than perfection.

    • Find a role model or mentor who has achieved what you want to achieve. It will give you some insight and inspiration. Talk to them whenever you need a boost, but ultimately learn how to motivate yourself.

    • Join a community or group of people who are working towards similar goals. It will provide support and motivation. You can find online groups or meetups in your area.

    • Create a vision board for what you want to achieve. It will help you stay focused on your goals and visualize what you want to achieve. You can create a physical or digital vision board to help you imagine and visualize your goals.

    • Set weekly or monthly goals to track your progress and see how far you’ve come. It will help you stay motivated even when you do not see results immediately.

    • Find a friend or family member who will support you on your journey. It is someone you can rely on for encouragement and accountability.

    • Read motivational books or listen to podcasts. It is a great way to get inspired and learn new tips and tricks.

Starting small is a great way to improve yourself without feeling overwhelmed. Remember to set realistic goals, make a plan of action, and be patient. And don’t forget to celebrate your accomplishments and practice self-compassion. With these five steps, you’ll be on your way to a better version of yourself.

Top 10 Ways to Make a Huge Leap Forward in Life

Everyone has those days when you could use a little help. Perhaps it's not looking forward to your next presentation, or you don't know where to start with your latest business idea.

Maybe it's not feeling motivated enough to start that project you've been thinking about for months or find that perfect client. The bottom line is: sometimes we need the right push in life and the right person to give us that nudge.

So, what can you do to make that giant leap forward? Try these strategies:

    1. Take one step back to move forward. Often, the first thing to do when you need to move forward but feel stuck is to step back. Stop. Avoid trying to force something to happen.

    • Then, you can see what needs to be done and break it down into smaller steps. The more you do, the quicker you'll start to feel better and be in a position to take the next step.

    1. Monitor your state of mind. When life gives you lemons, it can be hard to see the positive. It's so easy to see the negative situation and feel overwhelmed. Try to stick your head in the sand for a while.

    • Try to block out circumstances you can't change and focus on the things you can change. Before long, you'll have a much more positive outlook and will end up making more progress than you ever imagined possible.

    1. Identify the details of what's going on. Sometimes we don't realize how many pieces are involved. It's easy to think you're facing one problem when it's a combination of things.

    • Be honest with yourself. Which aspects can you change, and what elements can you influence? Also, which parts could you let go?

    1. Let the past go. Just because you had a terrible experience in the past with no chance of a positive outcome doesn't mean the past has to define you.

    • Embrace the mistake or pain as a chance to learn and grow. Who knows, the negative experience could be the catalyst for future success.

    1. Consider your options. Look beyond your current circumstances and examine all the choices and possibilities. Don't get caught up in your present feeling and give up your power. You always have a choice about your next move.

    • When you look at all the options at your disposal, you feel hopeful, motivated, and empowered.

    1. Devise a plan and stick to it. At this point, you have all the information you need. You've worked to change your mindset, taken a step back, let the past go, and considered your options. Now, it's time to take action.

    • Set some goals and realize your dreams. Get out of your way, follow your heart, and seize the moment.

    1. Remind yourself of your "why." There's no time like the present. Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way and most importantly, always remember your core values.

    • Remember why you started this journey and what you ultimately want. This attitude will help you stay strong and focused.

    1. Start small. Building momentum is crucial to your success. Take small steps each day and gradually build momentum toward your goals.

    1. Discard what no longer works, even if it worked in the past. Use past experiences as a guide, but don't be afraid to try something new if it works better.

    • Sometimes, people fail because they're scared to let go of the systems that brought them to their current stage. Don't let that happen to you!

    1. Always be grateful. Your attitude has a significant impact on your life. Gratitude is the best attitude to have because it takes you away from what you don't want and focuses you on what you do want.

    • An example of gratitude is feeling thankful to your parents for all they've done for you. Another is feeling thankful for your health and not being afraid to go to the doctor when you have a health issue.

Motivation is not always constant, but you can find your way back to it. All you have to do is relax, take it easy, and consider what you're trying to accomplish.

Even when things seem impossible, there's always a chance for you if you have the patience, determination, and enlightenment to persevere.

How To Be More Optimistic Every Day

Are you a “glass half empty” kind of person?

Maybe you consider yourself to be a realist, or you think you’re more of a pessimist. Either way, you might find that life gets a little more enjoyable when you can take a more optimistic approach to things.

Research suggests that optimists actually enjoy a range of lifestyle and health benefits just because they look on the brighter side.

If you’re an optimist, you’re more likely to have better health, both mentally and physically, reduced stress, and more determination to reach your goals.

So, how do you be more optimistic? It all starts with approaching life in a positive frame of mind.

How to Tackle Life with More Optimism

We can all have moments where we feel down in the dumps about something. You might have a bad night’s sleep and suddenly struggle to see anything in a positive light. Maybe a negative experience at work has given you a sour taste in your mouth.

However, when pessimism takes over everything you do, it’s hard to find the joy in life.

While you don’t have to be happy-go-lucky all the time, you can take steps to actively increase the amount of optimism you bring into your world.

    For instance:

    1. Give yourself more credit. How often do you sell yourself short? When something goes right in your world, do you admit it’s because of something that you’ve done, or do you assume it has nothing to do with you?

    • When something good happens, take a minute to stop and analyze your thought process. Ensure that you give yourself credit for making that positive thing happen.

  • Avoid undermining yourself by saying that you had a lot of help from others or suggesting that anyone in the same situation could do the same thing. Instead, own the fact that you’ve accomplished something and allow yourself to be happy about it.

  • Give yourself a break. We can often be our own worst critics. Unfortunately, this makes it quite difficult to live a life based around optimism. If you constantly beat yourself up for making mistakes, take a moment to think about how this is affecting you.

    • Ignoring the bad things that happen in your life is never a good idea. Burying your head in the sand can make issues more significant. At the same time, failing to understand the negative could mean you’re doomed to repeat the same mistakes.

  • However, that doesn’t mean you should dwell on the bad things or make yourself feel terrible for what you’ve done.

  • Instead, remind yourself that you’re a human being, and like anyone else, you make mistakes. You don’t have to be perfect all the time (that would be unrealistic). Give yourself a break and remind yourself to learn and do better in future.

  • Surround yourself with positive people. Finally, one of the best ways to become more optimistic is to surround yourself with those who already look on the bright side of things.

    • Sometimes it takes practice and training for you to reach a point where you can start looking at things from a different perspective.

  • When you surround yourself with positive people, you can pay attention to the way they look at things and learn from their approach to the world. Optimistic people help you to become more positive yourself by giving you a model to emulate.

  • Plus, you’ll often find that positive people can be wonderful cheerleaders when you’re trying to make positive changes in your life. They’re always there to support you and give you credit when you’re struggling to take it yourself.

It’s Time to Be More Optimistic

The key to optimism is to maximize your focus on the things you do well and the good experiences you have in life. At the same time, it sometimes helps to minimize your failures or at least prevent them from taking over your perspective.

Being optimistic doesn’t have to mean ignoring the bleaker parts of life, but it does force you to let more positivity get through.

Examining your shortcomings and mistakes will allow you to overcome challenges and achieve more in the long-term. However, it can’t help to give yourself a pat on the back for the things you do right too.

The more you practice challenging your thought patterns with the quest to become more optimistic, the more automatic the experience will become.

You can start by focusing on developing optimistic habits gradually. Eventually, you’ll get to a point where you can accept both the positive and the negative parts of your life. Seeing more of the positive will help you to become more optimistic as you enjoy its many benefits.

7 Ways to Overcome the Fear of Being Judged

Fearing what others think about us is a huge fear for most people. We consider how people will view our house, car, clothes, career, and vacation photos on social media. It’s questionable how many people are actually living an authentic life versus trying to impress their peers.

    This is a trap.

At the end of the day, living a life with the primary intention of impressing others will leave you feeling empty and angry.

The best way to avoid the temptation to impress others is to overcome the fear of being judged.

Live life on your own terms with these strategies:

    1. Avoid judging others. You assume that the things that you do and think about are the same things other people do and think about, but that’s not always true. You’ll be less prone to worrying about being judged if you stop judging others.

  • Deal with your inner critic. We wouldn’t be worried about other people judging us if we didn’t think about it. While the thoughts that pop into your mind are beyond your control, you do have the power to redirect your attention to more useful and supportive thoughts.

    • Catch yourself when you have a negative thought and think about something more positive, instead.

  • Remove the people in your life that judge you. This might seem harsh, but why in the world would you want someone like that in your life? Have a chat with them and explain that you’re done tolerating their behavior. If they refuse to change, or can’t change, let them go.

  • Avoid making comparisons to other people. Everyone is different. It’s impossible to make any comparisons to others that are 100% fair. You’re either being too kind to yourself or too hard on yourself.

    • It’s easier and more meaningful to just compare yourself today to yourself in the past. If you’re making progress, you’re doing very well.

  • Remember that it’s not really about you. People that judge you have issues.

    • They might be jealous.

  • They might be upset that your success is highlighting their lack of success.

  • They might be seeking attention.

  • They might just be unkind in general.

  • Regardless of their reason for judging you, ignore them and move on.

  • Be a savage. You might feel weak and fragile, but you’re not. Your ancestors were tough. They were savages compared to the average person today. You come from people that survived wars, plagues, droughts, and had to perform a lot of miserable manual labor. You’re tougher at your core than you think.

  • You’re always going to be judged regardless of what you do. No matter what pair of shoes you wear, some people will love them, and others will hate them. Every single thing you do and say will be appreciated by some and scorned by others. It’s a game you can’t win, so it will benefit you to refuse to play it.

    • Just do what you feel is best. You’re going to be judged either way.

  • If you stay home and do nothing, everyone will think you’re a lazy bum. There’s no escape.
  •

The fear of being judged can be crippling to your happiness and sense of fulfillment. Everyone is going to judge you, but it doesn’t matter. The opinions of 99% of the people you know are completely irrelevant.

Instead of worrying about what others think, spend your time creating and building your life. Overcome your fear of being judged and live on your own terms. It’s the only way to live.
