Empathy - Think from their perspective I believe Police officers choose the profession to serve and protect, in my years of driving, I have probably gotten pulled over more than 20 times. I believe my method of empathizing with the officer’s perspective has given me favor.

• What would it take to get you to …? (so we can get what we want)
• Did you ‘Get Em?’ (Are you an exterminator chasing a rodent?)
• Who are you doing this for? (well me of course … who did you think I was doing it for?)

What if sales and service success was primarily judged on client empathy, effectivity, and impact? What if the leaderboard highlighted the professional's ability to connect and actually see their clients. What if there was a great way to measure one's ability to listen, understand, empathize and truly provide value.

Having curiosity and seeking to understand another’s perspective puts you in a powerful position to serve because you know why they believe what they believe. If we listen and understand, we are in the power position.

From episode 034, we heard of a woman who discovered a greater truth. Rather than seeking to tell, we can seek to understand. It is more powerful to learn what you know rather than prove what I know. Someone else’s truth creates an opportunity for connection. Greater truth. If something you believed to be true turned out not to be true, when would you want to know?

When people are polled about who is the biggest impact in their lives, who is their hero, the overwhelming response is not the superhero we see in the movies. Rather, it is someone very close to home. A parent, a friend, a boss, a coach, a teacher. Who’s watching and listening to you? Who’s hero are you? You are better than your self-talk, better than you get credit for.

Today, the people are begging for authenticity. If we can’t relate to your humanity, it is difficult to accept your guidance. Difference between being vulnerable and being weak. I don’t have all the answers. I am trying to figure it out. Show how you are human without leaving them feeling insecure about your leadership.

Joe Dirt became a radio hero for authentically telling his story as he genuinely sought connection.
