"ChemRisk is the [company] that Ford basically paid forty million dollars to, in order to, I don't know, resynthesize studies that have already existed. You know, done like a metanalysis. I kind of think of it like the mortgage crisis, where the banks were repackaging good loans with bad loans, and then saying, "oh, they're good loans," when they really weren't."
Hunter and Al have on an old friend, Jamie, a trial lawyer in New Orleans who works for clients that have contracted mesothelioma. These mesothelioma cases are sometimes caused by enormous companies (such as Ford Motor Company) including mesothelioma-causing asbestos in their products. These big companies then spend a huge amount of money to pay for studies (conducted by consulting firms such as ChemRisk) concluding that the big companies have a dubious liability... when previously the studies tended to show definitively that the big companies were at fault for including asbestos in their products. These cases are especially immoral when the staff at the big companies had been informed in advance that their decisions would cause mesothelioma.
But the conversation isn't all serious. Between laughs, we discuss the changes to the short-term rental market in NOLA (and how that will likely affect other locations), the importance of jury selection for trials, and hot new thrash metal bands.
