For our first official inductee into the new Psychotronic Hall of Fame, we could think of no one better than Joe Dante, a director who embodies everything that psychotronic cinema stands for, from his roots as a Monster Kid and graduate of the Corman school, through his later mainstream breakthrough, which he achieved without ever abandoning his love of classic genre cinema. For the entire month of December, we'll be exploring the films and career of Joe Dante.

After the unexpected success of PIRANHA (both critically and commercially), Joe Dante began getting calls from Hollywood to make a horror film. The one he ended up coming on board for is the film we’re talking about this week, the 1981 werewolf flick THE HOWLING.

Joining us this week is special guest Jeremy Johnson! We’ll discuss how Dante got involved and how the film was adapted from its original source material (and the many changes that were made by returning Dante collaborator John Sayles), as well as how the iconic special effects were created by future effects legend Rob Bottin.

We’ve nominated this one for the Psychotronic Canon as well, so let us know if you think that THE HOWLING is an essential piece of cult movie history!
