DAIRY Country

Ep 6 - Are we safe in a slight pivot away from China for our dairy trade?

Listen Later

Whilst geo-political unrest around the globe is the major focus for New Zealand’s dairy exporters, analysts and our Trade Minister, Dutch farmers’ focus of unrest is at home as their own government is buying dairy farms to shut them down.

This episode explains how New Zealand’s dairy industry can be less reliant on China with demand from Middle East, Africa &  South East Asia alongside reduced production from other dairy exporters seeing forecasts with a minimum of $8/kg.ms going forward.

Guests include:

  1. Christina Alvarado - Commercial Manager for Dairy Data and Insights, NZX
  2. Hon. Todd McClay, Minister of Trade
  3. Sjoerd Hofstee, Dairy Journalist, Netherlands

Hosts:

  1. Sheryl Haitana, Editor, Dairy Exporter
  2. Anne Lee, Deputy Editor, Dairy Exporter
  3. Sarah Perriam-Lampp, Managing Director, CountryWide Media

Editor of Dairy Exporter, Sheryl Haitana along with her co-host Anne Lee, Deputy Editor, expand their focus offshore with three interviews focused on the outlook for our dairy trade in 2024 and how we can position ourselves slightly away from a resilience on China.

Christina Alvarado from NZX shares her insights with Sheryl about the impact of disruption of trade due to a drought in the Panama Canal along with her thoughts on our growing demand from other trading partners other than China. Christina also discusses the impact of the EU’s unrest as well.

Sarah speaks to our Trade Minister, Todd McClay, to hear his thoughts on how New Zealand balances our defence priorities with a potential AUKUS allegiance alongside our goals to double the value of our agricultural exports which China has attributed to our past success. Todd also gives his thoughts on the potential of a Trump administration and learnings from the past.

Jackie Harrigan recorded an interview in late 2023 with our regular international dairy contributor, Sjoerd Hofstee, following what has been an unprecedented situation with the Dutch government buy-out scheme to buy dairy farms to shut them down as their option to reduce agricultural emissions.
