Stanley, a college film student, fainted during a documentary showing a close-up of a bleeding wound. During the brief unconsciousness, he had a profound experience. First, he found himself in a serene, timeless realm, akin to "heaven," where he sensed a divine presence but no specific religious figure. Then, he witnessed the universe's creation, observing stars, Earth, and all life at a micro level.
After seeing his own life and death, his soul hovered above Earth, feeling omniscient. However, he realized he was gripping something and was informed by "God" that he was still tied to the physical world. Despite resisting, he was pulled back through a dark tunnel and regained consciousness, surrounded by classmates.
When he opened his hand, he found a set of keys. His Indian friend later explained that placing brass in an unconscious person's hand was a local custom to keep the soul in the body. Though Stanley had only been unconscious for about a minute, he experienced what felt like multiple eternities.
