Episode 219: Dr. Joel Kary, Sports Physician with St. Vincent Sports Performance

Listen Later

Dr. Kary is a Sports Performance Physician at St. Vincent Sports Performance. This will finish up the first series of St. Vincent interviews that have left me with a huge take away that I need to strength train more.

Dr. Kary completed his undergraduate studies at Anderson University in Anderson, IN with a degree in Athletic Training. He earned his medical degree from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in 2003. His family medicine residency training was completed at St. Francis Hospital in Indianapolis followed by a primary care sports medicine fellowship at the University of Notre Dame Sports Medicine Fellowship in South Bend, IN. He served as an assistant team physician for football and basketball and head team physician for men’s soccer while at Notre Dame.Dr. Kary has been a Team Physician for Butler University since 2007. He is also a Team Physician for USA Track and Field, Bishop Chatard High School, and Ed Carpenter Racing. His work as a sports medicine physician has included serving at the USA Track and Field Championships, USA National Gymnastic Championships, FINA World Swimming Championships, Big Ten Basketball Championships, and numerous other national/international sporting events. He has served as the Medical Director for the Carmel Marathon and the Geist Half Marathon.

In this episode we get to hear how Dr. Kary got into his career, his running background, running a 2:57 marathon at 41 and how he trains with the run less run faster process to keep injuries away. We end the conversation with 5 tips for the everyday runner.

I hope you enjoy this episode! I plan to do a couple more St. Vincent interviews so make sure you send me an email with any questions you might have and I’ll be sure to include them upcoming conversations with the Professionals at St. Vincent!
