Annabelle explains that she had always worked in the industry but was looking for a change when the pandemic hit. With her son having a congenital heart defect, she needed flexibility to work from home, which her new employer denied. So, she decided to explore the idea of setting up her own bookkeeping practice.

Annabel approached her employer with the idea, and to her surprise, they supported her and became her first client once she obtained her license in June 2020. Working around her two young children, Annabel gradually acquired more clients, primarily in the beauty, care, and construction industries. The growth of her business led her to establish a limited company in April 2021. Eventually, her husband joined the business as a bookkeeper after leaving his previous job.

Annabel emphasises the importance of flexibility in her work-life balance, allowing her and her husband to prioritise their children and attend to their needs. She shares how being self-employed offers them the freedom to choose their hours and accommodate family commitments, such as school runs and medical appointments. Annabelle also discusses the significance of building strong relationships with clients based on shared values and open communication.

The episode concludes with Annabel mentioning her expanding team, which now includes support with social media, blogs, websites, and project work. She recently hired two new bookkeepers whom she is training to take on more responsibilities, allowing her to focus on higher-level tasks and the overall growth of the business.
