On Episode 3 of The Fifth Court, presenters Mark Tottenham BL and Peter Leonard BL are joined Simon Mills SC (a qualified doctor he was previously RTE's Gerry Ryan's 'on-air' doctor). Having graduated in medicine in TCD - he swears his fellow students appealed his academic results because he hadn't attended his lectures - but after some years he decided he didn't want to be a doctor and returned to study law in UCD.
Simon, who has authored two books, is renowned for his work inn medical negligence (aka 'medneg') cases and here he discusses issues arising in fantastic detail. This episode is a 'must listen to' not just for those in the law, but for those working across all of medicine, as well as physiotherapists, opticians and those in allied professions. Among the many things Simon mentions is the absolute importance of an apology in many cases. It can make a very big difference.
We ask our guests for their favourite books, music or films that they would recommend to those in the law. Simon says he hates legal depictions in the movies, with the notable exception of the courtroom scene in 'To Kill a Mockingbird' which he recommends.
