Episode 30: "Performance Punishment" May Be Destroying Teacher Morale At Your School

Listen Later

Have you ever heard this quote? “No good deed goes unpunished.”

What about this one? “If you want something done well, ask a busy person.”

One more quote: “Once you do the impossible it becomes part of your job description.”

What do these three quotes have in common? They are all describing “Performance Punishment”.

Performance punishment is the negative consequences that high performing individuals may face as a result of their exceptional productivity. This can include being given additional tasks or responsibilities, being expected to work longer hours, or being subjected to additional scrutiny or criticism.

These are usually recurring tasks that someone else has failed to do well or do on time and are therefore falling into the laps of people who have demonstrated their ability to pull through at the last minute.

This is something that I have done before and regretted it. On today’s episode, we are going to discuss:

  • What is Performance Punishment?
  • How it could be destroying the morale at your school
  • The “Performance Punishment Cycle”
  • Why is it a problem?
  • What are some of the warning signs?
  • 7 Ways to avoid Performance Punishment at your school
  • I know how busy you are. That's why I created a weekly podcast that you can listen to while driving to school, working out or running errands. Think of this podcast as your weekly dose of inspiration, motivation and PD, all while doing something else! I hope that you will listen. More importantly, I hope that what you hear helps you thrive at your school.

    Thanks for listening!
