On this week's episode of the Project Upland Podcast, Garrett Mikrut joins the show to talk about his 2017 upland hunting season and specifically a recent trip he took to Montana. Garrett Mikrut is an upland hunter through and through, perhaps second only to being a family man. He lives and breathes upland hunting year round and pursues upland birds with a passion and a deep respect for the traditions of the sport.
I met Garrett while in college in Duluth, MN. A common interest in our pursuits at the time, be they a degree in finance, women or upland birds, eventually brought us together! All kidding aside, Garrett and I share a love for hunting traditions and many fond memories in the northwoods of Minnesota. Over the years since college, our passion for upland hunting has risen to the forefront and results in most of our fall adventures.
Garrett recently returned from an upland bird hunting trip to Montana. This was Garrett's second upland hunting trip to the great state of Montana and he returned home with plenty of memories and recollections of another succesful trip. On this week's show Garrett and I talk about how the Montana trip is structured and how the guys that go on it work together to pull it all off. We discuss land access, hunting methods and of course birds, which include sharptail grouse (sharpies), pheasants and hungarian partridge (huns).
I also talked with Garrett about the importance of having "dog-power" on an extended out-of-state trip such as this one. Furthermore, Garrett and I talk about our love of double guns, specifically the American-made A.H. Fox. Garrett introduced me to these guns after he was introduced to them by a fellow upland hunter.
To close our conversation we discuss our annual grouse camp which will be occurring in WI this weekend. Stay tuned to the Project Upland Podcast for some potential Grouse Camp-Casts coming your way!
