We are back after the holiday break. On this episode we chat to Martin Hopwood now 65, he first took up triathlon in 2007 at the age of 50. Since that time he has competed in over 60 triathlons qualifying for the GB age group team in 2010 competing at the World AG Championships Beijing 2011. Competed in subsequent World and European championships in Alanya, Kitzbuhel, Geneva & London.
Following a 6th place Ironman distance race at the European Age Group Championships in Weymouth in September 2015 Martin was diagnosed with lower colorectal cancer.
Martin was then treated with an 8-week combination of chemoradiotherapy followed by a ten-week window of rest before major surgery and finally 6 months of curative chemotherapy.
Since that time he has fought back to similar levels of fitness but with the limitations of a two third reduction in bowel capacity and neuropathy of the feet.
However in 2008 Martin completed the Escape from Alcatraz triathlon in San Francisco and qualified once again for the GB AG team in Brighton 2019.
Hope you enjoy Martins journey.
