What happens when a historic building gets a second chance and becomes a neighborhood staple? Owner Nancy Abramo joins me to share the story behind Parkside Meadow, the neighborhood pub she built from the bones of a once-infamous college bar. Nestled in Buffalo’s Parkside neighborhood, this spot isn’t just a place to grab a drink—it’s a celebration of history, community, and great food.

We talk about what it means to truly know your customers, the joy of serving scratch-made meals, and why signature dishes like her shaved lamb sandwich have earned a loyal following.
We also dive into Buffalo’s ever-evolving story, from hidden historical gems inside the restaurant to the incredible moment when a 90-year-old politician discovered her campaign pin in one of the display cases.
Nancy’s passion for creating a welcoming space shines through in every detail. Join us for this episode as we talk about the heart of a neighborhood pub and the connections that make it feel like home.

In this episode I had the privilege of hearing the story behind Miller’s Thumb Bakery in Tonawanda, NY, with co-owner Jill Colella. Jill shares how she and her business partner, Stephen Horton, combined their passions for food and baking to create a bakery unlike any other in Buffalo. From Stephen’s experience as a James Beard-nominated baker to Jill’s background in teaching cooking classes, publishing multiple cook books, and food marketing, their paths merged to bring artisanal bread, freshly milled flour, and community spirit to Western New York.
Jill reflects on Stephen’s years of experience owning a bakery in Minneapolis, where he honed his craft and developed a deep appreciation for milling fresh flour. Inspired by the city’s rich grain history, the two began dreaming of bringing this practice to Buffalo. Their vision became a reality when they found a space at 258 Highland Parkway, Tonawanda, New York that allowed them to create not only high-quality bread but also a deeper connection to Buffalo’s local grain economy.
The bakery specializes in naturally leavened sourdough bread and pastries, with standout favorites like their rustic loaves and cinnamon rolls. Jill shares how each product reflects their commitment to using fresh, locally sourced ingredients and their passion for traditional, artisan baking techniques. The result is a bakery that doesn’t just feed people—it educates and inspires them.
Tune in to hear Jill’s heartfelt reflections on returning to Buffalo, where the city’s grit and pride created the perfect environment to open Miller’s Thumb Bakery. She also discusses their long-term vision for the bakery and their role in building a sustainable local grain economy. Don’t miss the chance to visit and taste the incredible bread and pastries that are already becoming staples of Buffalo’s food scene.

In this episode, I was so excited to sit down with Brad Hahn, Executive Director of Explore Buffalo, at its headquarters inside the historic First Presbyterian on Symphony Circle. Brad shares how Explore Buffalo began over a decade ago in a tiny office that was literally a closet and has since grown into a thriving organization with seven staff members and over 200 dedicated volunteers. Together, they reflect on the organization’s incredible growth and its role in Buffalo’s resurgence as a hub of architectural and cultural pride. From its early days of word-of-mouth promotion to today’s dynamic, ever-expanding tour offerings, Explore Buffalo has become an integral part of showcasing the city’s unique charm.
Brad reveals how his early love of Buffalo’s historic architecture, sparked by childhood visits to the Central Library and neighborhood tours, shaped his path toward founding Explore Buffalo. He recounts the pivotal moment in 2011 when Buffalo hosted the National Historic Preservation Conference, igniting local interest in preserving and celebrating the city’s architectural treasures. Brad also discusses the innovative yearly membership program that has made tours accessible to thousands, encouraging locals to explore neighborhoods like Kaisertown, South Buffalo, and beyond. With over 150 different tours and 2,000 annual tour dates, Explore Buffalo connects Western New Yorkers and tourists alike to the city’s rich history and vibrant culture.
Looking ahead, Brad teases exciting plans for 2025, including new tours focused on Seneca Indigenous history and a series of free Erie Canal Bicentennial tours. He emphasizes the importance of rigorous docent (tour guide) training to maintain the high-quality experiences Explore Buffalo is known for, ensuring participants leave each tour with a deeper appreciation of the city. Whether it’s a leisurely bike ride through Frederick Law Olmsted’s parks or a walking tour of hidden architectural gems, Explore Buffalo has something for everyone. Del’s journey from a social media influencer in the Buffalo Bills community to a leading figure in local philanthropy is both inspiring and impactful. Erik visited Del at the 26 Shirts headquarters on Kenmore Avenue, which serves as their corporate office, warehouse, and storefront, to discuss how the brand has evolved and where it’s headed.
