Every show is "groundbreaking" these days.  Generally speaking, it just means that the producers paid for ads disguised as news articles.  But there was a time, long ago, when shows actually did break ground.  Buffy the Vampire Slayer was something that's unheard of on modern television: original.  It also bridged the gap between younger and older audiences, specifically showing the darker side of teenage life in a realistic way, juxtaposed against a very not-realistic backdrop.  Nowadays an edgy show about high schoolers is considered passé, but there was a time when being a teenager meant real problems not being depicted in fiction very often.
