"You know that's where I first fell in love it was like laying something down, and then figuring out what to go on top of it. I know there's lots of people out there that are doing that now and it's so much easier to do now. And I love that, I think that's awesome. And that I think that's just how I how I kept motivated and writing my own music."

You'll be amazed at the endless studies that show just how much of the brain is being worked when musicians improvise and spontaneously create music they've never played before. If there's one topic that I love teaching more than any other thing, it's improvisation.

I often think back, what would it be like to have lived in an era where we couldn't hear music? Unless it was played live in front of us?

What would a musician like Johann Sebastian Bach, or Mozart, think about the technology we have at our fingertips these days.

Would they take such great care to write every note on manuscript paper so that their music could be preserved for centuries to come?

Would they have left us countless albums that we could go back and hear the masters at work? Wouldn't it be nice to know what Mozart actually sounded like, and not have to rely on a reproduction based off of a piece of paper.

Kris - "Okay, I this is the most self indulgent episode for me personally. And I was hoping it would be because I get to here a bit back to 23 years ago, when I started teaching Jim Rickbeil and Jim and I have been in each other's lives for 23 years now. And it was quite amazing. I was actually 23 At the age that I met him. So there's a lot of numerical magic moments going on here. But Jim, Jim has a really good recollection of how things went in the beginning. And I didn't recall any of that. So getting to hear from his own words, and through your guidance as a questionnaire. It was it was really fun to go back and go, I'm not like that at all anymore. And that was kind of what I was hoping to reveal. And partly in this episode was that the longer you do something, the more you learn about it. And for all of those of you out there that are teaching or doing anything new, you know, stick at it, even if you aren't doing the best work you're going to do in your life, it's still a starting point."

Those are some of my favorite lyrics of all time and they're written by John K Sampson. It's a song called winter wheat, and it perfectly describes my recollection of being on tour in the prairies. So the first time I heard the song and heard those lyrics, I fall in love with them, because I've been there. And anyone who's from the prairies or has been through there can really relate to the content of that song. Who are some of your favorite lyricist? Stop and take a moment to think about why you like their lyrics and what they mean to you....

About three and a half years ago, Kris received an email from Rebecca Vincent. She runs a wonderful program in the Vancouver school board called LA LS, which we'll explain in the episode. And she said, Look, I've received some grant funding. Would you like to come in and help out with music in the classroom? And I jumped at the opportunity. That experience changed not just my life, but so many of the teachers on Empower Through Music. We are jazzed about this episode, Rebecca really inspires with her story of how she works with the kids, how we can all improve our self regulation, and how we can better support each other in our community. I think this episode is timely. I think it's so important that we share it. And I just can't wait for our listeners to get to hear Rebecca story and the kids and the LA LS program.
