Everyday Tech

Host(s): Abram Nanney, Shane Chism, and Sabir Abdul-Haqq (www.yourebs.biz) ft. guest interviewees Phillip Rollins, owner of OffBeat (offbeatjxn.com) and Clark Lee

Topic: Today we're ripping a page out of Next Stop, Mississippi's book and highlighting an event that's taking place right here in Jackson...but it's much more of our own nerdy/geeky vibe. Owner of Jackson-based alternative culture store Offbeat and Mississippi Public Broadcasting's own Clark Lee join us this week to discuss the upcoming 2024 Mississippi Anime Fest!

Topic: A couple weeks ago we actually got our first talk to us message asking us to talk about the types of technology used in the Super Bowl. From drone shows to augmented reality, there were a lot of things maybe a few people had never seen before, but they’ve been around for a while. So today on Everyday Tech, we’re gonna expand that prompt a little to also include other ways we have seen this technology used. Thanks to Mike from Tupelo for suggesting this to us.

Topic: Every so often on this show, we bring up the topic of connectivity in Mississippi. We’ve established Mississippi’s growing need for internet access and answered a few questions on the subject. How has it improved in recent years? Why does it need to improve? And how can we help? Today, we have Director Sally Doty of the BEAM project who is gonna help us answer all these questions in greater detail and tell us about her work in Connecting Mississippi.

Guest(s): Sally Doty, Director of the Broadband Expansion and Accessibility of Mississippi Project

Topic: If you’ve listened to previous shows, you know that we talk about the phones we carry in our pockets every day, a lot – probably almost every show. And every time, I mention that we’ll eventually do a show pitting iPhones and Androids against each other. Well, today is that day. iPhone vs android. What are the advantages of both? What are the problems with both?

Topic: Today on Everyday Tech, the server is open - we want to take the time to answer your tech questions. Did you get a new phone you don’t know much about? Thinking about buying a personal computer? Maybe your tv went out and you’re looking at getting a new one? In the meantime, we have a list of apps you could use to help you achieve your 2024 goals which we’ll talk about between your calls and emails.

Topic: When does technology go too far? Where do people draw the line? In recent weeks, it seems we’ve found some people’s limits with technology and the world of AI. A new videogame has been accused of using AI art for its assets. There was a chatbot campaigning for president. AI being used maliciously to create explicit images. And also, a possibly unfortunate end to important telecommunications legislation. What does all this mean going forward?

Guest(s): Jerome Pesenti, founder of Sizzle AI

Topic: We’ve talked about AI many, many times on Everyday Tech. However, I think it’s time for us to discuss how artificial intelligence can actually help and improve our lives. To help us with that, we welcome an expert in the development of AI to the show – Jerome Pesenti. Jerome has been a leader in the field of artificial intelligence for 25 years and has played a fundamental role in the advancement of tech companies like BenevolentAI, IBM, Meta, and now, Sizzle. His input and recommendations even helped shape the UK government’s initiative to advance the artificial intelligence industry in the UK.

Topic: Today on Everyday Tech, we’re returning to the Versus Series where we pit two products or services against each other and see what the pros and cons or advantages and disadvantages of each are. A popular debate in the gaming community is over which console people prefer, Xbox or Playstation. In order to help our audience be better informed, we wanna take the time today to compare and contrast the two in several areas. Previously when we tried to bring this subject up, we had some callers call in to share the love for Nintendo Switch and other consoles, which are great, but today we just wanna talk Xbox vs. PlayStation.
