Welcome to the seventy second episode of the #Expatchat podcast and the first episode for 2023 where we discuss the latest tax and financial issues affecting an #Australianexpat.

In today's Expat Chat we open 2023 with a new episode and run through whats to come in 2023, the new office for our Australian team and our exciting new announcement about a new service from the Atlas Wealth Group - Atlas Tax.

In 2022 there was a lot going on - Russia invaded the Ukraine, interest rates went from being on record lows to record increases and inflation was proven to not be transatory unlike what the central bank governors around the world were saying in 2021.

Fast forward 12 months and we now have interest rates at a more normalised level, inflation is starting to taper in most countries and covid restrictions are almost a after thought for most.

We are proud to announce the launch of Atlas Tax, a specialist service providing first-class tax compliance and advisory services to Australian expats.

This new division will ensure we can provide full-service, quality expertise to Australian expats around the world, building on our multi-award winning reputation for quality in financial planning, asset management and mortgages.

In today's Expat Chat we wrap up the 2023 calendar year as well as answer some audience questions.

As we approach the end of the year, interest rates are starting to squeeze households, the war in Ukraine continues, and many world economies may already be in recession.

From an investing perspective, it’s likely we’ll be looking forward to welcoming in the fresh start of 2023.

Touching on investment matters, we’ve seemingly found some calm among stocks and bonds recently.

The housing market has experienced a slowdown across leading indicators such as construction activity, mortgage lending and most recently in sales prices.

This was the year when the Fed finally admitted that the highest inflation rate since the early 1980s was not "transitory" in a stunning mea culpa.

The Atlas Wealth team will be taking a short break over the Christmas - New Year period and the Dubai office will shut down from the 22nd of December and will return on the 5th of January.

Welcome to the seventieth episode of the #Expatchat podcast where we discuss the latest tax and financial issues affecting an #Australianexpat.

In today's Expat Chat we talk about the United Arab Emirates government has recently issued a resolution that will determine tax residency for natural and legal persons for the first time and is due to come into force on 1 March 2023.

Up until recently there was no statutory definition and Australian expats who are resident of the UAE relied upon the availability of an annual lease agreement (including Ejari, where applicable), and a minimum of 180 days of residence in the UAE.

Article 4 of the Resolution defines natural persons (individuals) as tax residents in the UAE if one of the following conditions is met:

* The individual’s usual or principal place of residence is in the UAE and the centre of their financial and personal interests are in the UAE or other conditions prescribed by the minister; or

* The individual has been physically present in the UAE for a period of 183 days or more in a 12-month period; or

* The individual has been physically present in the UAE for a period of 90 days or more over a 12-month period and is a UAE citizen, UAE resident, or GCC national who either has a permanent place of residence in the UAE; or carries out a job or business in the UAE.

Where a person is considered a tax resident under either of the definitions outlined above, they may apply to the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) to obtain a Tax Residency Certificate (TRC), which is often a formal requirement for UAE residents wishing to claim benefits under the relevant tax treaty or other forms of tax relief (outside the UAE).

With over 16,000 Australian expats living in the UAE this announcement is a positive step in their ability to qualify their election as a non-resident for tax purposes in Australia.

Tax treaties are formal bilateral agreements between two jurisdictions.

Australia has tax treaties with more than 40 jurisdictions.

A tax treaty is also referred to as a tax convention or double tax agreement (DTA).

They prevent double taxation and fiscal evasion, and foster cooperation between Australia and other international tax authorities by enforcing their respective tax laws.

You may not have heard of a DTA however with the new proposed tax residency rules they are going to become more important in the every day expats life and will feature more prominently in a Australians expat day to day conversations.

Welcome to the sixty fifth episode of #Expatchat where we discuss the latest tax and financial issues affecting an #Australianexpat.

In today's Expat Chat we answer the question of should an Australian expat transfer their cash to Australian dollar with the recent falls the currency has experienced.

What the Australian dollar is doing and may do in the future is probably the most common conversation topic amongst Australian expats.

With the recent interest rate increases occuring globally combined with investors taking a more conservative approach we have seen the US dollar strengthen against most currencies.

Australian expats who are earning US dollars or currencies pegged to the US dollar like the UAE Dirham, Saudi Riyal, Hong Kong Dollar and Qatari Riyal now is a very enticing time to consider exchanging some funds and converting them to AUstralian dollars.

We find that currency risk is one of the major risks that Australian expats experience in their life overseas and by methodically moving funds back to Australian and in turn Australian dollars it means that when it comes time to return home you are not relying on the Australian doillar to be weak at the time.
