This is my consultation with Dr. Matt Reddy and Nutritionist Stephanie Morish.

If you haven't done so already, go back and listen to episode 42 where we talk about the test and why you need it.

  • 44: Training and thinking like an athlete with Shane Miller
Shane Miller was born and raised here in Colorado. He grew up playing soccer, basketball, baseball, and downhill skiing.
Baseball was his biggest passion though, and he played all the way through college. Shane wasn't the most naturally gifted player. He knew he had to work harder than most, and that meant coming in early, staying late, and using strength and conditioning to maximize his talent.
In this interview, Shane mentions a mentor of his who showed him how a strength coach could pull out the talent from his athletes.
Shane saw what strength and conditioning were able to do for athletes' careers, and it was a way for him to stay involved in sports.
He talks about how he's always wanted to be better than he was, and he wanted the results fast. Now he's learned to have patience.
That's something he teaches his clients at Project Move.
He likes to walk them around and show them the rope that they'll eventually climb or the weight that they'll lift one day. But it's a project. You won't get there overnight. You have to be patient.
"We don't have to be the fittest man or woman in the world or the most elite athlete. But while we're training let's be disciplined and do everything we can to have no regrets. Set out to achieve your goals, not someone else's."

Shane sees all kinds of people walk through the doors at Project Move.
    He says,
Most people want to look good, feel good, and get the most out of their body.
People often come to Project Move for that performance element and to discover their potential.
Be patient and commit to the process.
It can take six months to sometimes two years for tissues to remodel, and for motor abilities like strength and movement quality to really develop.
You'll probably see some quick gains when you first start, but keep a long term mentality and imagine what you can do in six months to  a
    year.
If you'd like to see what Project Move is all about, check out their Introduction to ProjectMOVE Program. This is 4 weeks with 3 classes per week (12 total), designed to prepare your body for the regular classes. This is where you learn the basic fundamental movements of our program and the diet. These 12 very focused classes with intensive teaching and training on nutrition and all the aspects of working out will expedite the process of reaching your goals.
Also be sure to check out their blog and events page.

Join Project Move on September 24th at 9am for their kettlebells4kids fundraiser.  The workout: perform a 9 minute AMRAP of 9 kettlebell swings, 9 burpees, 9 kettlebell swings, then 9 box jumps. It will be fun and it's all for the kids!
You can donate or share their donation page here.
Project Move is also doing a giveaway for you guys!
The Performance & Recovery Giveaway is a roll of RockTape, a free movement screen including corrective strategies and 1 month of Recovery Center membership at the Renovation Room worth $210!
I'll choose one winner on September 22nd.

  • 43: Kettlebell training with Justin Rewa from Project Move
    Today's guest is Justin Rewa,
Director of Personal Training at Project Move in Littleton, Colorado.

I love learning what drives people to be healthy or fit, and with trainers, why they're driven to help others.
Early in the show Justin shares what sparked the fire in him.
"My cousin passed away from a massive heart attack, and it was at that point that I said, I'm buckling down, getting my certification and helping as many people as I can live a healthier lifestyle."
Justin's most definitely driven to help others, and he's curious.
He's curious about what the human body can do and eager to learn the best ways to do it.
Just check out his bio at Project Move.
He specializes in  weight loss, strength gains and rehabilitation.
Justin's top tip for weight loss is to focus on your nutrition. Don't go on a fad diet. Don't starve yourself.  Do something you can maintain forever (at 90%, cause you should have a piece of cake once in a while :) ).
Justin also goes into barefoot training, and how this helps you perform and feel better.
Another big focus of his is mobility for prehab and rehab.

And incase you can't tell from his pictures, he's a big fan of kettlebell training.
From The Kettlebell Project to supporting kettlebells4kids, Justin and Project Move are making a huge impact.
Interested in trying kettlebell training? Justin's giving you the chance to try it out for free! Just go to Projectmove.com/join-us and use promo code "explore" and get 5 free kettlebell classes with Justin!
Be sure to keep up with their events page and blog.
PM is a great resource for cutting edge fitness education.
You can reach out and connect with Justin at Project Move, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.

  • 40: Spreading the gospel of fitness with Kristen Olson
    Today's guest is Kristen Olson.
Kristen and I first connected back in December 2015 through Denver Sports Recovery.
I came across DSR and was really impressed with all of the services and cool equipment they have.
Having just launched this podcast, I really wanted to get some of their experts on to talk about what they do.
Since Kristen's the Brand Manager for DSR and NeuraPerformance (who we talked about in the previous episode), she was the one to follow up with me.
She's arranged interviews with DSR's Recovery Specialist, Chris Contini, who was on episode 27, Rachel Ragsdale from ep. 39, and several more to come.
I wanted Kristen on the show because she's doing so much for the Colorado fitness community and "Spreading the gospel of fitness"as she says.

    Colorado Rising Stars Lacrosse, LLC:

Born and raised in Colorado, Kristen comes from a family who loves sports.
She's been playing lacrosse since she was a kid and has developed a passion for Crossfit, competing in several CF games over the years.
She's actually doing this interview from the Crossfit games where her dad is competing.
Since Kristen has so much experience with Crossfit, I asked for her advice for anyone who's just starting out.
    She says,
Crossfit's pretty new for everybody. It's not a sport that we grew up playing.
Nobody starts out doing 50 pull-ups.
You go in to it for fitness and to become a better you, but you gain friendships and become part of a community.
To anyone who's walking through those Crossfit doors for the first time, go with an open mind and have fun.
Reach out to Kristen if you are looking for advice or connections.
Be sure to check out the Do More Charity Challenge coming October 1 & 2.
We all have charity causes that we believe in.  The Do More Charity Challenge allows you to choose the cause that YOU believe in and want to compete on behalf of. And if you do well, earn money for their cause.

It is a 6 person, two-day event that is going to be a lot of fun. If you have any questions, send an email to: [email protected].

The Do More Charity Challenge is the only event in the CrossFit world where you can earn money for your charity of choice with your athletic performance.  Last year we reased $105,000 in sponsorship dollars for the prize purse.

She helps people with issues from anxiety, depression, and trauma, to peak performance, concussion recovery, and neuromuscular rehabilitation. I'm betting there's a good chance you've had some of those issues listed above or you know someone who has.

Her experience with Brain Mapping as a teenager
Success stories from her practice and more!
If you want to learn more about the brain, Rachel recommends:

The biggest thing that Rachel wants you to take away from this interview:

  • 38: Staying fit through pregnancy and beyond with Nichelle Gurule
Thank you so much for being here!
Whether you’ve been listening, subscribing or sharing the show, I really appreciate the support guys! The goal with this show is to support and grow the Colorado fitness community and to be an inspiration. So that when life get’s hard and you feel down or defeated, you have something to help lift you up and keep you going! Because that’s what it takes to succeed. You have to keep going! I chose to interview Colorado fitness experts because these guys are the ones we turn to for support and motivation. They help people just like you every day and have likely had some of the same struggles as you. I want you to get to know them, the challenges they’ve faced, and how they can help you with your fitness goals.
    Today we have Nichelle Gurule,
Nichelle’s a Chiropractor and personal trainer, who's focus is on Pregnancy, Post-Partum, and Pediatrics. She owns Enhanced Movements Chiropractic and Wellness Center with her husband Antonio who was on last week’s episode.
Nichelle and Antonio are putting out some great YouTube videos. So if you want to see them in action or just want to get some great tips on moving better, check it out!

One of the biggest challenges that Nichelle mentions is fitness through her pregnancy and post-partum. "Before it seemed like I had a body that could do just about anything and then all of a sudden hormones kick in and I'm exhausted and nauseous all the time."
Nichelle gives some great tips for fitness in general here but also for the expecting or new mothers out there. Or for the new dads looking to help their baby’s momma through everything.
I had a lot of fun talking with Nichelle. She has a ton of energy and a great story. I think you guys are really going to love this one.
Nichelle's main focus is with Post-Partum.
She says, so many women don't get the care they need. They're focused on their child, and they don't do much for themselves.
There are a lot of changes that take place during and after pregnancy with the body and how you function from day to day.
Nichelle has a class at Crossfit Moov Vital called Mom Fit, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
Mom F.I.T. is specifically tailored and programmed class for new moms! This class gives new mothers a chance to workout with a trainer, be in a group environment that is sympathetic to the challenges of being a new mother, meet other moms in the area, and workout without worrying about daycare.
Nichelle's top tips for new moms:
Listen to your body. If you take care of your body, over time, it will understand what it needs.
If you're thirsty, drink more. If you're breastfeeding, you'll need to drink more.
Hungry? Eat more. Just make sure it's clean, nutritious food.
    Rest when you're tired.
It's ok to take a few days off from working out when you feel like you need to.
Remember that your body can change. You just have to be consistent with clean eating and a healthy fitness routine.
To learn more about Nichelle or to get in touch, go to Enhanced Movements Chiropractic and Wellness Center.
Also, I'm trying to help Fit2BeKids find some help for their upcoming 5k pumpkin patch event this fall. They need event planning volunteers, day of event volunteers, sponsors, runners and community advocates. If you or anyone you know would like to help out, reach out to Coach Shae at [email protected].
Many thanks to Nichelle for an awesome interview and to you all for the love and support!
    Much love,
    Jason
