  • No Food Waste, Feeding the Planet with Love, Peace,& Vegetables
"If we change the criteria for purchasing all foods in public schools, and buy directly from the farmers and ranchers that are caring for the land regeneratively, we will address climate change and teach the next generation the values of nourishment, stewardship, and community."- Alice Waters Rose and Ruhani host a program about limiting your food waste while learning how to use nutritious foods in new ways. Maggie reiterates the statistic according to the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that the average American generated about 219 pounds (99 kg) of food waste and gives us her simple strategies to eliminate waste from a teen's perspective. The hosts interview Marcela Tobal Benson who has published one of the most beautiful books we've ever seen. Love, Peace and Vegetables is the result of Marcela's journey to realization, beginning as a child in Buenos Aires, Argentina. With a mashup of Syrian and Israeli Jewish parentage, and the South American cosmopolitan upbringing of Buenos Aires, she was the embodiment of cross-cultural influences, embracing ritual, family, and culture of all. The book is filled with arresting art, poetry, spiritual inspiration, pristine eating food prep instruction, gorgeous photography of luscious dishes, and hundreds of yummy recipes that will entice the pallet. It is a guidebook for self-love and a manual for adding more love and peace into the world. Marcela unselfishly shares her secrets to optimum health and happiness through fresh, organic meals. In the final segment, Rose discusses how she learned about growing her own food and eating healthily through the Alice Waters Edible Schoolyard program offered at her school. Maintaining a school garden results in nutrition lessons that become a consistent, built-in part of students' educational experience. When children spend days, weeks, and months growing their own food and maintaining a proper garden, they eat more healthily and feel empowered. Find peace and love with vegetables and healthy food. • Internet Culture and Child Sex Trafficking
"Child slavery is a crime against humanity. Humanity itself is at stake here." —Kailash Satyarthi The internet is a powerful tool and an integral part of modern society. Living in a fast-paced digital world, individuals can contact others worldwide at the simple click of a button. Applications like social media and Google have created many benefits, such as staying up to date with important events and global news, increased interaction with other individuals, and increased accessibility to educational material. As of 2019, 59.5% of the worldwide population used some form of internet. That is 4.66 billion people, all interconnected through one single platform! However, with this increased communication and exposure to potential strangers and outsiders, internet safety is a top priority that should be taken seriously when searching and using the Internet and technology. The internet can be a dangerous place, prone to predators ready to pounce on innocent children and teens. Ruhani and Hannah highlight the isolation and loneliness that the pandemic has caused in young people and the exploitation that has resulted. • 10 is the average age of child being groomed online • 8 days is a how quickly a predator can groom andrecruit a child into sending nudes or leaving home tomeet a stranger • 98 is the percent increase in child online exploitation between 2020 and 2021 • 21.7 million reports of child sexual exploitation made to the CyberTipline in 2020 included 65.4 million images, videos, and other files. They each provide a powerful segment of advice from teens for teens to keep them safe and also converse with one another about personal experiences. HOW to STAY SAFE: • Keeping all information secure and private • Setting strong passwords and safeguards for all social medias and applications used • Double check and verify information and links sent to you, as it could possible be a scam • Be extremely careful when talking to strangers online • Using secure wifis and VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) to avoid getting hacked or having your IP address leaked They advise to never give out home or school addresses or send sexually explicit photos via the internet, even to a boyfriend or girlfriend as those could be used in a nefarious way. "Grooming" refers to when someone builds a relationship, trust and emotional connection with someone so they can manipulate, exploit and/or abuse them. They discuss catfishing, when someone claims to look like a specific person, but they may be using someone else's profile. Now more than ever children are at risk for online child exploitation and it canhappen at home. Any child can be targeted and is susceptible. • Technology and CRISPR
"It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity." Albert Einstein Sidney and Rose take a deep dive into technology, the history and the future. In her segment, Breaking Boundaries, Sidney talks about how tech platforms are fueling political polarization. With the creation of technology and the rise of the digital age, a significant decline in investigative journalism has occurred as people turn to television and social media as their focus for news. While social media giants have gone out of their way to deny that their algorithms contribute to the promotion of disinformation and extremism, research says otherwise .Their teen guest, Varsha Shankar, presents an easy digestible description of CRISPR or clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats, a gene editing mechanism that can be thought of as a copy and paste for genes. CRISPR deploys an enzyme called Cas9 to cut and edit our DNA strands. Because of its wide range of abilities, CRISPR has had a significant impact on disease treatment and other medical innovations. The discussion included the new research in CRISPR's potential to treat malaria and cancer patients. In Biteshare, Rose informs us about the small print on social media platforms such as Instagram that relinquish rights. Telehealth and telemedicine are positive aspects of technology as is the ability to order food for delivery, especially for those who do not have transportation or as a result of the pandemic. The health app on the Apple watch is one of her preferred ways to keep informed about her daily exercise, sleep patterns, and general health. Both hosts stress the importance of being aware of the issues surrounding social media. While it does have its benefits, there are also significant drawbacks to social media, especially if you use it as a news source. Make sure to fact check the information you're receiving and try to actively seek out and consider viewpoints that may differ from your own. • Follow us: https://www.starstyleradio.com/expressyourselfteenradio • https://www.facebook.com/ExpressYourselfTeenRadio/ • https://www.facebook.com/BTSYAcharity/ • Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/expressyourselfradio/
