  • Portrayals and Perceptions of Todays Teens
Teens have been given a bad rap throughout generations. But what do the teens themselves think of their portrayal in the media and the perception of their activities? Jack Pawlakos and Joven Hundal host an insightful program with reporter Kenneth Jeon to speak about their personal experiences. In general, entertainment is darker with more mental health issues profiled. According to a 2018 report from Mental Health America, the rate of youth with Major Depressive Episode (MDE) increased from 11.93% to 12.63%. More awareness is being raised about the issue, and movies and shows have seemingly begun to reflect that awareness. Statistics are indicating the today's youth bring more diversity, empathy, and inclusivity to their real lives, however, TV and movies don't always show the positive sides, but instead, use dated stereotypes. Youth are globally connected today and tomorrow they will be the leaders of the world. Let's show them respect!

  • The Gift of Responsibility and 'the Extra Mile' Man - Shawn Anderson
Responsibility connects your life to a bigger story. To gain responsibility is to gain awareness. Joven Hundal and Kenneth Jeon read chapters from Be the Star You Are!® (www.CynthiaBrian.com/books) and then interview the leading voice on the power of the "go the extra mile" message, Shawn Anderson. In 2009, in order to symbolize the go the extra mile message, Shawn Anderson (a non-bicyclist) pedaled 4,000 miles ocean-to-ocean, interviewed 200 people along the way whom had been identified as having gone the extra mile, and then gave $10,000 of his own money to the people and organizations whose stories most inspired him. The momentum of this unique day has continued to build each year since, and on November 1, 2018, 552 mayors and cities made the Extra Mile Day declaration and recognized the value of the extra-mile volunteers who were making a difference in their community. Be responsible for yourself and others and go the extra mile.

Work/life balance is the hot topic these days as so many working people burn out after years on a job they hate. What's the answer? More play time! Hosts Jack and Siri read chapters from two books in the Be the Star You Are! series penned by Cynthia Brian that will pump your energy and get you singing happy times. In Trends without Ends, Jack shows us studies on play that offer six skills that are built when we play. Joven chimes in suggesting that our favorite ways to "play" could be in sync with a potential career option.Surround yourself with playful individuals who tap into their inner clown. Give yourself permission to invite leisure and purposeless pleasure into your routines. No matter how old you are, incorporate play as an integral part of your daily life, both at home and at work, and you'll find yourself happier, healthier, and a beacon of positivity. Being earnest and being playful are not antonyms. To be successful, we need both traits. Take a break. It's recess time.
