Extra Hot Great: This Week In TV

The latest high school-based '80s sitcom to get a revival is HBO Max's 2021 take on Head Of The Class, so Daniel MacEachern -- a fan of the original in its day -- has joined us to talk about whether it's a pass or fail! Around The Dial takes us through Season 2 of Frayed, an update on Married At First Sight, Deutschland 89, Yellowstone, The Great British Bake Off (or Baking Show, depending on where you are), Project Runway, and the findings of the TV Holiday Corridor Committee. Tara explains why she is NOT a crackpot to think Rick was funnier before his lines got subtitled on Big Mouth. Danny presents the Ted Lasso episode "Trent Crimm: The Independent" for the Canon. Then we name the week's Winner and Loser and close out with a Game Time that has us contemplating celebrity mortality. Get out your notebook -- do kids still take those to class?! -- and listen!

Your co-hosts weren't feeling that psyched about any of this week's TV premieres -- sorry, Judy Justice on IMDbTV -- so we invited our Patreon supporters to pitch and then vote on TV episodes for us to discuss under the rubric Fall Forcenings. Thus we are going in on L.A. Law's "Good To The Last Drop" with guest Adam Grosswirth, who originally watched it as a pre-teen and...learned a lot about hysterectomies and their possible side effects? Around The Dial takes us through Insecure, Queens, The Big Leap, The Good Wife, and The Good Fight. Adam makes the case for Max Headroom's series premiere, "Blipverts," to be inducted into The Canon. Then after an extra-spooky Winner and Loser, it's on to a Game Time that doesn't overstay its welcome. Look out: it's a new episode of Extra Hot Great!

Netflix's new animated series Inside Job posits a world in which basically every conspiracy theory you've ever seen on Facebook is real; John Ramos returns to discuss whether it's worth exposing the NSA to it via the recording device that's always running in your phone! Around The Dial takes us through the third seasons of Succession and You, and the second season of We're Here. Tara takes a hard stance on when holiday episodes should air. 🤬 Q: Into The Storm on HBO Max

Our patron Eric Akawie challenges us to name shows that got Wrong Spinoffs, and to correct history by proposing spinoffs that would have been Right!

Sarah asked: What about creating Star Trek: Lower Decks-style shows for other series? Which low-powered employees from an existing TV show would make for a good spinoff?

Lots of spinoffs involve giving side characters the spotlight -- your Rhodas, your Lous Grant. What Lex Ann specifically wants us to imagine are spinoffs that center the CHILDREN of the ancestor series: and we've delivered!

So maybe MAYBE, Dave didn’t read last week’s EEHG correctly and instead of the prompt being a spinoff featuring children of a show, he thought the challenge was to develop a spinoff OF a spinoff. So that’s what we’re doing this week because the idea has been rattling in his head.

We knew Cyd, like Tara and Dave, had just done a rewatch of the original-flavor CSI, so we were really glad she could join us to break down CBS's new reboot of its network-changing old favorite (which...only went off the air like six years ago?). We talked about whether we'll keep watching for "The New Class" after l'affaire Hodges gets resolved, when exactly the show thinks it is culturally, and what's going on with the sloppy editing. Then we went Around The Dial with Call The Midwife, Legends Of The Hidden Temple, grief-therapy sitcom recs, and Buried (with another Lauer rant from Buntsy) before Cyd was NOT a crackpot about shows using consultants on "hacker" and other internetty storylines. Chris Billig tried to get all our exercise balls up the hill in support of his Taskmaster Canon submission before Mlle. Caroline won, Netflix lost, and we put a foot in two worlds with a Game Time about reboots. Make sure to leave a fingerprint on the "play" button; it's an all-new Extra Hot Great.

The EHG gang have been recording this podcast for almost a decade now. In podcasting terms, that makes us positively Methuselahian. Since the start of EHG, our listeners have asked if we had a tip jar or donation system and we'd look at each other and say surely that is a joke, people don't pay other people to do podcasts. We'd email them back "Ha ha ha, good one, Chet" and go about our business. Now we are told this is a real thing that real nice people do. Value for value? In today's topsy turvy world? It's madness but that good kind of madness, like when you wake up at 3:15am and clean your house. Or something. In all seriousness, we are humbled by your continued prodding to get a Patreon page up for EHG and here it is! Extra Hot Great on Patreon

We're so grateful Nick Rheinwald-Jones jumped through a green Jurassic vagina with us to watch La Brea, NBC's latest attempt at a sci-fi dystopia -- but this one involves a sinkhole in "Los Angeles," were-dogs, and Jon Seda. Should you watch the pilot just for the dumb crappy fun of it all? Or is it too stuck in that 2006 "we can be the next Lost" mindset to be enjoyable? We definitely enjoyed going Around The Dial with Controlling Britney Spears, The Big Leap, Being James Bond, Tea With The Dames, Teen Mom: Young & Pregnant, and Squid Game, and in related news, Dave was not a crackpot about flashbacks to events in the same episode. David Ellis Dickerson challenged us to pick a show bible a la the Star Trek: TOS episode "A Piece of the Action," and base an entire future society on it, and then Nick challenged our conceptions about second episodes of series when he pitched Episode 02 of Succession for the Canon. Bergeron won, Messing lost, and the Game Time season came down to a single letter. Take a nip off that flask and tell the government about your visions: it's an all-new Extra Hot Great!

FX on Hulu's take on comics series Y: The Last Man has finally made it to air -- and Taylor Cole has finally made it over from The Great American Pop Culture Quiz Show to talk about it with us! How is the show different from the comics? Can Diane Lane's hair still be a national treasure if her roots are a plot point? And does a certain Hero need to get written out of the story? We went Around The Dial with Frogger, Scenes From A Marriage, Miracle Workers, and 30 For 30's take on the '86 Mets before carefully selecting TV's smartest (and hottest) characters to get us Extra Credit at pub quiz.
