Fairy Tale Fix

Just in time for Halloween, Abbie & Kelsey find some folk tales featuring two brave and cunning final girls. Kelsey reads The Skull, a spooky tale about a disembodied (non-floating) skull with a twist! And Abbie reads a Seneca folk tale, The Vampire Skeleton, that needs to become the latest indigenous horror hit following Prey (are you listening, Hollywood?).

Spooky season begins on Fairy Tale Fix! Kelsey reads a haunting tale called The Leg of Gold from Ruth Manning-Sanders’ A Book of Ghosts & Goblins, generously donated by a friend of the pod Chris Otto, followed by an...interesting (gross) story called The Strange Feast by the Brothers Grimm. Abbie reads the chilling yet charming story of The Goblins at the Bath House, also from A Book of Ghosts and Goblins.

This week’s episode is very ~aloreing~ and features some very special guests! Kimmy and Ryan from the comedy folklore & cryptid podcast Aloreing join us to talk creatures and cryptids found in fairy and folk tales (when we can find them). Will their prior knowledge of Jezinkas and Kelpies help them better predict the endings of these classic folk tales? Kelsey reads a story featuring Jezinkas which are evil forest witch maidens called Smolicheck: The Story of a Little Boy Who Opened the Door, and Abbie reads a couple of short stories about Water Horses. Listen to more of Kimmy & Ryan at Aloreing.com.

At last, an episode all about talking cats (sort of)! Abbie cracks open a new book to tell the Japanese tale of the Vampire Cat of Nabeshima, which is pretty much just as cool as it sounds. After, Kelsey brings you the adorable palate cleanser The Small, Small Cat.

We got a new book, River Folk Tales of Britain and Ireland by Lisa Schneidau and it is FILLED with some fantastic stories. Kelsey reads some poetic nonsense that leaves us feeling dreamy with The Stars in the Sky, and Abbie reads a much darker but super cathartic tale The Wounded Swan. Moral of this episode? Don’t eff with swans. Ever.

It’s random reading time and Abbie reads Johnny and The Witch Maidens which sounds sexy and is but in an unexpected way, and Kelsey reads Herr Fix It Up which is like the off-brand version of The White Snake, with even more horse murder than before.

We’re back, baby! Join us for a super-sized episode of Fairy Tale Fix with Abbie reading the framework tale for 1,001 Nights (also known as The Arabian Nights) with the wildly serial killer-esque story of Scheherazade (which we have a brilliant fix for), and Kelsey reads the incredibly long but oh-so-classic Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp.

In this previously Patreon exclusive bonus episode, Kelsey reads Dapplegrim, which really blurs the line between fairy tale and horror, while Abbie reads the much more satisfying (albeit birdless) Fitcher's Bird.

In this previously Patreon exclusive bonus episode, Abbie & Kelsey do a randomized reading of two fairy tales for some genuine, organic reactions. Abbie accidentally picks one of the best tales we’ve ever read, John and His Brothers, while Kelsey accidentally picks one of the worst tales we’ve ever read, Roland.

In this very special episode, Kelsey reads Prince Loaf as written by Ruth Manning-Sanders and Abbie reads a fairy tale written by one of our very own listeners and Patrons–Sarah! Enjoy listening to our newest favorite fairy tale of all time, Abbie and Kelsey and The Boss Ass Dragon.
