Fairy Tale Fix

Abbie & Kelsey talk *The Witcher season 2! Oh, and I guess they also read some stories. Abbie randomly chooses a story from the Russian Fairy Tale Pantheon and stumbles upon The Golden Slipper, which most definitely should have been called The Fishy Godmother, while Kelsey chooses a random story from A Book of Sorcerers and Spells and reads about a daring adventure in The Sleeper.

Kelsey and Abbie get into the holiday spirit the only way they know how – with some sad, existentially dreadful tales written by a couple of sad Victorian bisexual boys. Kelsey reads Hans Christian Andersen’s The Steadfast Tin Soldier, while Abbie opts for Oscar Wilde’s The Happy Prince.

Abbie tells us the wholesome tale of Bull’s Winter House while both Abbie & Kelsey cast Parks and Rec characters for the story. Kelsey tells a tale about three extraordinarily talented women and their superficial nephew-in-law in The Three Aunts.

Kelsey enjoys a cup of hot apple cider (possibly with vanilla whiskey) while telling the story of The Apple Tree Man and explains some background about wassailing, and Abbie tells the story of The Old Witch who really needs to do her chores more often.

It’s time for a blind reading! Abbie & Kelsey let the fates decide two randomly chosen fairy tales for some genuine, organic reactions. Abbie reads the terrifying tale of Lu-bo-bo, a hungry beast out for teenage blood (at least we wish), while Kelsey reads the classic Little Brother and Little Sister, and are once again disappointed by creepy old kings preying on young maidens in the forest.

In this special Halloween episode, Kelsey covers two terrifying Grimm fairy tales: How Children Played At Slaughtering and The Juniper Tree, which has it all – murder, possession, cannibalism, REVENGE! Abbie tells the origin story of Jack O’ Lanterns by covering The Legend of Stingy Jack. For more spooky folklore and legends, make sure to check out An Aloreing Halloween Playlist.

It’s spooky season! Abbie starts us off with an Irish account of The Headless Horseman from A Treasury of Irish Fairy and Folk Tales, and Kelsey (completely coincidentally) follows it up with yet another Irish ghost tale, The Nut Eating Ghost, from Jeremiah Curtain’s incredible ethnography, Tales of the Fairies and of the Ghost World.

It's our Podversary! To celebrate one year of Fairy Tale Fix, Abbie and Kelsey cover one of the big ones: Sleeping Beauty.

It’s Dragon Day! Abbie tells the story of the infamous and fearless Hidesato, whose heroic demeanor catches even the eye of a dragon king, in My Lord Bag of Rice. Kelsey tells a very different dragon story in Yanni, where–as usual–the story is not named after the right hero.
