FANTI

Just because we’re on a hiatus doesn’t mean we’ve run out of things to say! In this week’s minisode, jarrett shares his thoughts on You People and Tre’vell …sorta…explains why they’re not in a particular rush to see it. The two also react to the horrific behavior of the Memphis Police Department’s so-called Scorpion unit and their killing of Tyre Nichols. Plus, Tre’vell has an honorable mention that should bring some joy to word nerds.

Just because only one percent of the eleven-thousand wineries in the U.S. are Black-owned, doesn’t mean they don’t exist. To get proof, they left their homes and tracked down an expert–Leslie Jones, co-owner of Inglewood’s first and only wine bar, 1010 Wine. Thanks to their tireless reporting, jarrett and Tre’vell were able to get their hands–and mouths–on numerous glasses of wine from actual Black-owned wineries. Along the way, they learned about pushy wine reps, why it’s better to hold the stem than the bowl, and what inspires someone to open the first wine bar in Inglewood.

jarrett and Tre’vell are back at it again, refreshed from the holiday break and ready to drop some gems for our FANTIfam. Speaking of a break - when was the last time you gave yourself the opportunity to take a break? If your answer is “I can’t remember” or “a long time ago”, you’ll definitely want to take some inspiration from jarrett & Tre’vell this week.

Black Holiday Trivia is a Black-owned company that FANTI featured in this year's Holiday Gift Guide. Producer Swish officiates, and she wonders if Penguin Random House will regret publishing Historically Black Phrases (available for preorder!) once it becomes clear its authors aren’t as tuned into pop culture as they purport to be. It might even be the case that FANTI listeners know more about pop culture than they do. See if you can do better!

To follow Tre’vell’s labyrinthine explanation of who gets to decide which episode gets chosen for which spot, here’s how they described the process:

Rules by Tre’vell Anderson

We are going to collaboratively create “FANTI’s Holiday TV Watchlist,” a top 5. But we’re going to do it alternatingly, each placing an episode on the list.

The person that goes first makes picks 5,4,2 (more picks). The player that goes second makes picks 3, 1 (fewer picks, but the #1 pick).

The order will be determined by a trivia question, that Laura will ask. We will have 10 seconds to answer Laura. Whoever gets it right the fastest will win, and get to choose if they go first or second.

FANTI Holiday Gift Guide Recommendations

Meredith in Scotland recommends:

I'm from the US, but I live in Edinburgh, Scotland, so these recs are Scotland-based.  I'm not sure how many of them ship worldwide, but would definitely be some good options for other UK-based listeners.  (I know I'm not the only one!)

Black-Owned Businesses:

Rafiki Coffee

Delicious coffee!  Definitely recommend!

Matugga Rum

Theirs is my go-to spiced rum these days.  Love.  It.

Perf United

I've loved their Go Bananas Babe Butter and Go Bananas Babe Bar, but my fave is their Sauce Pot Babe Butter.  Smooth and silky skin, yes please.

Queer-Owned Business:

Natalie J Wood

Ceramics!  Beautiful bowls, vases, plates, clocks, and other things to beautify your home.  I've got like 7 or 8 pieces of hers and always want more even though I don't know where to put them.

Kari recommends:

Kobi Co.

I bought my niece in law a candle from Kobi Co. a Black owned women’s company from Minneapolis. They sell beautiful items that come with Spotify playlists.

Miiriya

Also there’s an app called Miiriya. It’s a store front that sells items from black businesses and they also have a section for people in need that you can give to.

Mel in Australia:

Trading Blak

Australia has a violent and shameful history, since invasion, in how white Europeans (especially the British) have treated Aboriginal people. One of the ways this oppression has continued is in the appropriation of Aboriginal art by non-Aboriginal businesses. Non-Aboriginal people have profited significantly from commodifying Aboriginal art without working as equal partners with artists, without understanding the stories embedded in the art, and certainly without sharing profits fairly. Trading Blak is one attempt to redress this, and is self-determination in action.
