This is the Think BIG Dentistry Show where your hosts Dr. John and Marilee Sears, will show you how to give your indecision and confusion a back seat to decisive, goal-driven decisions to move you forward. Where we will break out of the mundane and routine, ordinary biases and ideas about running a dental practice and propel you and your practice into profit! We'll give you systems and strategies to create a successful practice along with the freedom to live your most powerful life.
Today, Dr. John and I will talk about knowing your plan to work on your plan. In just three short days, 90% of people who created a New Year’s Resolution will have abandoned their resolution. January 12th signifies this goal abandonment day every year. Previously, we talked about goal setting in episodes 4 and 5.
The word goal doesn’t stick on the wall. People tell themselves that it’s OK not to achieve their goal - that their goal is optional. I like to talk about planning.
Planning is more concrete, more visual, more explicit, and directional. Your step-by-step guide to what you want to achieve. How are you going to make your goal? That is what your plan is used for - to accomplish your goal. When your plan isn’t working, you can adjust the plan, not giving up on your goal. Your goals are more comfortable to replicate when you have a plan in which you get there.
Think about what you want to accomplish and create a simple plan, don’t overthink your plan. The hardest part is keeping the promise to yourself to achieve your plan. The one person we are most likely going to break promises to is ourselves! Marilee recalls a moment when she realized she was breaking multiple promises to herself, but keeping promises to others.
We need to learn how to trust yourself and keep promises to yourself. Until this point, we won’t be able to achieve goals that are within our reach. If you can’t keep yourself accountable, why would you think someone else will do this for you? Trust yourself, give yourself a try. Learn to trust yourself and to keep promises to yourself, this is what great people do.
We will dig into an example of why the planning process is so essential with an excerpt from the book Be Unreasonable. When to be reasonable and when to be unreasonable. Dr. John will talk about reasons why he holds himself accountable such as personal pride and being an excellent example for his grandchildren.
Listen in to find out how to trust yourself, what you will learn when you set goals, how you should choose an accountability partner, and how you can keep yourself accountable.
