EP.208 - The Balanced Brain w/Dr Camilla Nord, Neuroscientist & Author
A powerful reframing of mental health, grounded in cutting-edge neuroscientific research
There are many routes to mental wellbeing and award-winning neuroscientist Camilla Nord is at the forefront of finding them.
Dr Camilla Nord, leads the Mental Health Neuroscience Lab at the University of Cambridge, MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit, and she has a dual appointment as Assistant Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at the Department of Psychiatry.
Her lab investigates brain-body interactions in neuropsychiatric disorders using methods from cognitive and computational neuroscience.
The Balanced Brain by Camilla Nord offers a revelatory tour of the scientific and technological developments that are revolutionizing the way we think about mental health, showing why and how events - and treatments - can affect people in such different ways.
In The Balanced Brain Nord reframes mental health as an intricate, self-regulating process, one which is different from all of us.
She examines a huge diversity of treatments, from therapy to medication, to show how they work, and why they sometimes don't.
In doing so, she reveals how the small things we do to lift our mood during the course of a day - a piece of chocolate, chatting to a friend - often work on the same pathways in our brain as the latest pharmacological treatments for mental health disorders.
Whether they help us to manage pain, learn from experience or expend energy on the things that are important for survival, these conscious actions are part of a complex self-regulating process that is unique to each individual and the constant backdrop to our everyday lives.
Nord shows that, with so many factors at play there are more possibilities for recovery and resilience than we might think.
The Balanced Brain is an invitation to discover pathways that make each of us feel better and to understand why.
Yvette Le Blowitz Podcast Host talks with Camilla Nord Author of The Balanced Brain to find out The Science of Mental Health.

Camilla Nord shares:

EP.205 - The Secret Life of You w/Kerri Sackville, Columnist and Author
Kerri Sackville is an Australia Writer. She is currently a regular columnist for Sunday Life magazine, Sydney Morning Herald and Melbourne Age.
Over the years, Kerri has appeared frequently on commercial and ABC radio networks, podcasts, and TV shows including Sunrise, The Morning Show and The Daily Edition.
Kerri is the author of five books: The Secret Life of You, The Life-Changing Magic of a Little Bit of Mess, Out There, The Little Book of Anxiety, When My Husband Does the Dishes.
Why is it so scary to be alone with your own thoughts? When columnist and commentator Kerri Sackville decided to put down her phone and learn to be comfortable alone, her quality of life soared.
Seeking meaningful time on your own can boost creativity and productivity, improve self-awareness, build resilience and moral courage, and, most importantly, improve your relationships and connect with others.
Many great thinkers from Buddha to Barack Obama have espoused the benefits of solitude but the busy-ness of modern life doesn't leave us much time for contemplation.
With smart phone, social media, endless streaming and podcast options, as well as the demands of work, family and friends, we are rarely left alone with our thoughts.
Even a few minutes a day can help us to rejuvenate from the daily grind and restore clarity and focus.

EP.204 - Difficult People w/Dr Rebecca Ray, Clinical Psychologist, Author, Speaker
Dr Rebecca Ray is a clinical psychologist, author and speaker. Over the course of almost two decades of practice Rebecca (Beck) has helped hundreds of big-picture thinking people, through courses and consultations, live a life that's fulfilling, unapologetic and free.
Whilst her technique is science-backed, her approach sees her deliver both hard and heart truths and an undercurrent ethos of self-kindness first, always.
Beck's unique expertise has seen her engage with thousands of people and sets her apart as one of Australia's most in-demand and authoritative voices in the personal development space.
Beck is the author of Be Happy, The Universe Listens to Brave, The Art of Self-Kindness, Breakthrough and Setting Boundaries, Small Habits for a Big Life and Difficult People.
Difficult People can show up in our lives as an explosive boost, a controlling boyfriend, a gaslighting colleague, an interfering mother-in-law, a friend who talks only about herself - we all know them, but how do we deal with them?
Difficult People take over our lives. They live rent-free in our heads. We steel ourselves before we meet them.
We can't relax when we are with them. We ruminate on their behaviour after they've gone. They harvest our empathy and operate without regard for our feelings.
In Difficult People, Dr Rebecca Ray shows us how to recognise (and understand) difficult people and provides us with practical strategies for self-preservation.
From learning when to say no, limiting contact and managing our reactions, to knowing when to walk away for good.
With her expertise, insight and guidance, we learn to understand how and when another person's behaviour puts our psychological safety at risk and what steps we can take to restore our boundaries.
Compassionate, honest and authoritative, Difficult People is your complete guide to getting your life back on track from the grip of a difficult relationship, and learning how to avoid them in the future.
Yvette Le Blowitz Podcast Host talks with Dr Rebecca Ray Author of Difficult People to find out how we deal with difficult people.
