  • Do Stoics Really Care? With Brittany Polat, co founder of Stoicare

    Do Stoics really care?

This time an interview with the passionate Brittany Polat. You can definitely say she is into the Soics, that's for sure.
Writer of two books: Tranquility parenting and Journal like a Stoic.

Co founder of Stoicare: a volunteer-run charity that promotes Stoicism as a philosophy of care and well being. They offer resources, events and a gathering space for all Stoics who care about other people and our planet.

Contrary to some common misconceptions, Stoicism had always been a philosophy of care: care for truth, care for people, care for self, and care for the world we live in. This ideal of active engagement in the world informs our approach of life. As Stoics, we proactively work toward flourishing for ourselves and others.

They help you meet each of these challenges:

    • as a carer, you face many challenges everyday. How do you continue to put your heart into your work without getting burned out?
    • How do you help dependent or disadvantaged individuals cope and even thrive in difficult circumstances?
    • How do you care for others while also taking care of yourself?

We also talked about the 4 C's: a simple equation to help maintain inner peace in the midst of difficult situations:

    Character + Cosmos + Control = Choice

We break down this equation and see how you can apply it to your own life.

The catch: once you realize that you don't have to get upset when something upsetting happens, you gain a new sense of control over your emotions.

Sooo... be patient to yourself, and don't expect to become a brand new person overnight. But one time, you will create more space for positive emotions like enjoyment, goodwill, and cherishing others.

  • How to Be Good! With Massimo Pigliucci

    How to be good

What a thrill to welcome Massimo Pigliucci to the podcast once again! His thoughts on moral philosophy, his direct speaking style and use of analogies always remind me of Epictetus – a hero we both admire. He also asks questions that give, well, pause. What is the function of a human being? What does it mean to be excellent? In 51 minutes of fascinating conversation, we explore these questions and other less-taken roads.

Massimo’s new book launches next week, so we touched on that as well. The new book has two titles (yes, plural: either ‘The Quest for Character’ or ‘How to be Good’, depending on where you buy it). One can actually learn to be good, says Pigliucci. It’s akin to playing an instrument. Find a good teacher, a role model. Expand your natural instincts… and practice. Maximize your imperative! Sound familiar? The Macs also got the inside scoop about leaders with questionable characters and why we choose them. Sound like an earful? It is. And it’s a most-rewarding listen, just like every conversation with this compelling thinker and story-weaver.

What’s your circle of concern? Next door? Across the world? See it in a different light. Just press play.

  • How to Control the Uncontrollable! With Ben Aldridge

    Stoic Bananas

Ben Aldridge’s neighbors think he’s crazy. After all, he sometimes walks backward through Hyde Park, takes bananas out for walks and tells jokes to strangers. He’s also a profound thinker and a gracious and rewarding conversationalist. So I was delighted to welcome Ben back to the podcast for another exploration.

We touched on this type of voluntary discomfort in our last conversation a year ago. The cold shower. Unpleasant. But alleviating, accepting and managing things you don’t like can help build inner confidence. The purpose is to transform the way you think about and respond to situations. Ben’s suggestion? An “anti-bucket list.” Combining fear and play.

In his new book “How to Control the Uncontrollable: 10 game-changing ways to help you think like a Stoic and build a resilient life”, this practical philosopher and adventurer describes his own first adventure: overcoming anxiety. As easy – or as difficult – as walking to a park bench. Equanimity is an elusive goal.

Please join us for a worthwhile conversation about treating your time well, gratefulness and purposefulness. Just press play!

  • Erase the Imposter Syndrome! With Mike Ettore

    Paradox!

US Marine Corps drill sergeants are supposed to yell, right?

This one wrote the book on being a better listener! 4 books, actually.

Mike Ettore - Marine Corps drill instructor, experienced business builder, executive coach, author – is indeed a paradox. A thinker and do-er with a noteworthy approach to leadership and life. And he was gracious enough to join me for a fascinating hour of conversation. Join us, won’t you?

Mike has given considerable thought to his own responses to life's inevitable challenges. His book “Ancient Wisdom: Stoic Lessons for Self-Mastery” provides ample evidence of this. He has also spent a lifetime observing and guiding others.

His 2019 book “TrustBased Leadership” touches on bravery and the willingness to be vulnerable, to ask questions. Identifying those in an organization who won’t - not can’t, but won’t – is essential. You must trust those working with you, and you must honor their trust in you. “Erase the impostor syndrome”, he exhorts. A podcast with a Marine drill sergeant? Just press play!

  • Let's Talk About The Art Of Quiet Influence: With Jocelyn Davis

    Don’t pull on the rice

Some people are good listeners. Some are great listeners. Psychologists, musicians, podcast editors… all good listeners. And then there’s Jocelyn Davis. She listens intently. With effort. Straining to understand. You notice it immediately. Jocelyn just may be the world’s best listener.

This may also be what makes her a fascinating author, speaker and coach. In her beautifully written, evocative books The Greats on Leadership and The Art of Quiet Influence, she writes about collaboration and the ability to get things done, make things happen. About persistence and thoughtfulness and working without coercion or what she calls “positional authority”. Grist for The Macs mill.

So I was thrilled when she said yes to joining me for a conversation. Our 45-minute conversational tapestry wove threads of New Mexico wildfires, the McEnroe-Borg clashes, practices for influence and a wonderful Chinese parable (don’t pull on rice to make it grow). Along the way, I learned the difference between authority and power, and about leading others - laterally instead of top-down – who don’t report to you.

Jocelyn Davis has applied her education in Eastern philosophy and literature practically. As she put it: “Taking mindfulness onto the playing field requires specific advice on how.” Invite participation, share power, aid progress. Tell others about how their contributions matter.

Sound easy? Think about it. She offers more.

Or what about this: Practice self-rule; manage your emotions. Be the steadiest person in the room, not the most powerful. Use your time well, listening to others.

Intrigued? Join in! Have a listen to how Jocelyn Davis listens. Just press play.
