  • Episode 34: Matthew Santangelo Joins for a World Cup Preview

First up, Matt and I discuss who the surprise packages at the World Cup, both teams and players. Could Croatia and Senegal cause upsets? Who's going to be the 'James Rodriguez' of this tournament? On the other hand- who's going to fail to deliver? Will France and Belgium crumble under the pressure?

Next up, will Belgium be the next Spain, or the next England? With so many individual talents, the pressure on Belgium is high- but can they find the cohesion and chemistry to take them far into the tournament? Matt and I have our say!

Neymar is most certainly going to be talk of the tournament, but will this be his World Cup? Will he lead Brazil to glory and finally stamp his name in history? Or will Brazil flatter to decieve. Their squad is most certainly stronger this time around, but will we see them finally replicate the winning mentality their 2002 squad have?

It would be a shame if Matt came on the pod and didn't discuss Serie A players, so I asked him what Serie A players will be stars at the World Cup. We discuss Luca Torreira, Arkadiusz Milik and various other italian based players who could have a great impact on the tournament.

Next, we talk about Leroy Sane and how he was left out of the World Cup final 23! The PFA young player of the year was dropped from the Germany squad, and we discuss why this may have happened- and whether or not Germany could regret it.

Finally, we had to talk about Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. Who will have the better tournament? Who will lead their team to glory? Find out what Matt had to say about the two best players on the earth at the moment.

  • Episode 33: Football Index CEO Adam Cole & Head of Marketing Mike Bohan Join the Show

First up, Adam, Mike and I talked about Football Index as a product. What is being improved to create a more practical app? Well the answer may not be improving the current website.....but starting all over again (from a tech perspective!). It's clear a massive revamp is happening behind the scenes, which will hopefully see Football Index as a product appease users who have complainbed about various bugs.

Now, foreign territories are something that come up time and time again, but where are Football Index with Launching Canada and Ireland? How many potential countries are being touted for possible expansion? Adam and Mike give us the lowdown...

One thing that's been consistently debated in the Football Index community is spreads. What's the thinking behind some of the spreads we see? Are there tweaks being made to make sure that liquidity in top players especially is not harmed? Are Football Index getting the balance between potential liability and liquidity right?

Now the afromentioned and heavily debated subject of spreads lead us to speak about the order book systems that were announced at the Birmingham trader meet. For those of you who don't know what order books are, I'd recommend checking out an explanation on investopedia- but it will basically allow users (similarly to betfair exchange) to set buy and sell prices for players. What impact could this possibly have on the index? How big a risk is it? Adam and Mike seem pretty positive that this will be a massive success story for Football Index!

Speaking of big decisions, we talked about the potential of a Share split. The much talked about split has been on the tip of every trader's tongue. Why are Football Index considering one? Is it just a short term fix? Adam and Mike talk me through their reasoning behind the potential of another split!

  • Episode 32: Jan Hagen Talks Portuguese League & Norweigan Gambling Culture

First up, Jan talks to us about Scandinavian and Norwegian football, fantasy football and betting culture in Norway. I was astounded to learn that over 2% of the Norwegian population (5 Million) play Fantasy Premier League! What an insane stat that is.

I didn't get Jan on just to speak about Norway though..the first player we discussed was Gelson Martins. The Sporting winger has had another solid season in Portugal and it may very well be the summer he decides to find himself a fresh challenge. His massive buyout clause may put suitors off, however with tensions rising between Bruno de Carvalho, the supporters and the Sporting players- there's a good chance we could see a mass exodus from the Lisbon club.

Next up, Andrija Živković was on the agenda. The young Serbian has earned rave reviews from scouts around the world and papers have already linked him to Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester United and a plethora of other clubs. But will it be better for his development to stay at Benfica for one more season? Why hasn't he played that regularly this season? Would a breakout World Cup see the chances of a big club coughing up the €60 million needed to activate his buyout clause? Jan answers all these questions and more.

Alex Telles, dubbed the assist king in Portugal seemed on his way to Chelsea at one point. Those rumours have recently dissipated, but Jan reckons it won't be long until they surface again. Especially as he's available for €30 million, which could look like a bargain if he performs to the level he's capable of.

Next, I ask Jan why Portuguese teams aren't as competitive as years gone by in Europe. The short answer was simple; Economic power. Jan talked us through why teams like Porto, Benfica and Sporting haven't made an impact in either the Europa or Champions league respectively in recent years.

Bruno is a player that has raised a few eyebrows across Europe. The talented and versatile midfielder has been linked to Monaco and a few other big European clubs already. Jan was ready and willing to give us the low down on yet another talented Portuguese youngster. This tied in quite nicely into the next section, which was all about one Shoya Nakajima. Dubbed the Japanese Messi, the Portimonense man has tallied up double figures in goals and assists this season, incredibly impressive. Jan adores the tricky forward, and thinks it's inevitable that a big club come calling sooner rather than later..

Someone who's dominated the British press recently is Anderson Talisca. After rumours surfaced that Besiktas would not take up their option to buy, which were then later confirmed by their President-Index traders jumped on the Brazilian midfielder, and he saw a monumental rise. Jan talks about Anderson's troublesome time at Benfica, but also about how much he's improved at Besiktas.

Benfica's talent pool is seemingly never ending, and Alejandro Grimaldo is another name that keeps cropping up. Is he really set to move to Naples? Or is there a chance a English club take a punt on the talented left-back?

Last, but most certainly not least- we talked about the best player in Portugal at the moment: Bruno . Surely the talented midfielder won't be at Sporting next season? Especially with no Champions League football...Jan raves about the Bruno, and seemed excited to watch him play at the World Cup. A big move is surely in the offing soon....

  • Episode 31: Share Split, Spreads and Mo Salah

First, Bob talked us through his Football Index journey; how he found the platform, how he's progressed since then and most importantly how much he's enjoyed the platform!

We talked about the rumoured share split, how it could affect the Index...but most importantly whether or not it's necessary? Is it just a short term fix for the platform? Should Football Index think about an alternative for the good of longevity.

After talking about Mo Salah for a little bit, it obviously brought up the FI elephant in the room, the spreads. Why are they so high on certain players? Why was there no large spread on Dani Alves after his recent injury? It feels like this is a subject that will run on forever, but how will FI eventually rectify this issue?

We laso talked about Value. Where is it in this current market? Should traders be investing for next season already? With the massive rises in some transfer rumoured players- surely there are some incredible opportunities here. What for the World Cup? Will players still rise massively during the World Cup, or is the value already priced in?

  • Episode 30: 90MAAT Join For a Premier League Special

First up, we discuss English youngsters that haven't yet received much playing time at their respective clubs, but are sure to be future stars. Rhian Brewster made the headlines with the England u17's where they won the World Cup and he was certainly pivotal to their success, scoring 8 goals along the road to glory. Eddie Nketiah was also talked about glowingly, the young gunner certainly has an eye for goal- as shown in his amazing substitute appearance for Arsenal in the League Cup where he scored a brace. Callum Hudson-Odoi has played a handful of games for Chelsea this season but he's already shown that he's a star in the making. Not too many youngsters get a chance at Roman Abrahmovic's club, but could he break the mould? Patrick Roberts- on loan from City to Celtic was also mentioned. He's recently been linked back to the premier league as a makeweight for some sort of deal with Riyad Mahrez, but can he be a success in England? Tom certainly thinks so!

The next couple of questions asked by Football Index traders were regarding Arsenal! The first of which, asked about Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere's futures at the club. Ramsey has 1 year left on his deal come the summer and Wilshere's contract is up, so what will happen to Arsenal's British midfield duo? Aaron Ramsey has emerged as one of Arsenal's leaders and best players, so a deal closer to Mesut Ozil's wage bracket is what he and his agent are surely vying for. Wilshere on the other hand has been offered a new deal, but reports suggest the offers have been rebuffed in hopes of more money. The second question was regarding players that could prosper with a new manager at the helm. We discussed Granit Xhaka, Mustafi and Bellerin who could all improve with the right defensive coaching. Could these players fulfill their potential under new management?

A question that traders constantly ask me is whether or not you should buy players who are leaving the Premier League. My answer always points to buzz returns- as some of you may have seen, with Coutinho, the buzz returns were just too good to resist and he saw massive price appreciation. This led us to discuss some players that could leave our shores, including the likes of Eden Hazard.

Relegated teams always offer great opportunities to Football Index traders, so I asked Tom what players could stay in the Premier League even if their respective teams go down. Now at the time of recording, we didn't know who was going down so we went and rattled off players from Southampton, Stoke, Swansea and West Brom that could be poached by bigger clubs in the league.

Next up we talked about Celtic's much coveted full-back Kieran Tierney. Constantly linked to Manchester United, he was bound to catch the eye of many Football Index traders, so Tom went and gave us the low down. Are Eddie Howe's Bournemouth an option for the him or will the red side of Manchester capture the talented left back?

Anthony Martial is sure to be in the papers this summer, so I asked Tom to give us as much information on the situation as possible. Where he could potentially end up? Does he need to leave to fulfill his sky high potential? Either way- he's surely going to have many, many suitors during the transfer window.

Speaking of Manchester United, we go on to discuss the positions that the most important club with regards to Football Index need to strengthen. Jose Mourinho has very publically stated that they won't go after any forwards, but could an Anthony Martial exit force his hand to go for Gareth Bale or Paulo Dybala? Or perhaps they'll target someone younger like Malcom? Defensively, a centre back and left back look like key targets for the Red Devils. As discussed earlier Kieran Tierney has been targetted, as well as Danny Rose, Alex Sandro and a number of others. At Centre half, Milan Skriniar, Kalou Koulibaly and Toby Alderweireld have all been linked with the club recently. With Carrick retiring, Fellaini seemingly on the move it looks like United will be in the market for a holding midfielder, as well as perhaps one in the box to box mould. Fabinho, Fred, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Arturo Vidal, Bryan Cristante and Eric Dier have all been linked to the club so it'll be fascinating to see who Jose Mourinho pairs with Paul Pogba next season.....if he stays at the club that is.

At the start of the show we briefly mention Chelsea loanees Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Kenedy, but what other players could return from their loan spells to make an impact at their respective clubs, or other Premier League clubs if they're sold. As well as dissecting the affects these two could have on Chelsea, we also talk about Jeff Reine-Adelaide, the Arsenal youngster on loan at Angers in Ligue 1.

This season we saw Mohamed Salah take the Premier League by storm, but who is next season's surprise package? Who is going to have that breakthrough season. Mo Salah appreciated over 1000% throughout the season so there's certainly money to be made if you pick right! Bernardo Silva, GiGi Wijinaldum and Ainsley Maitland-Niles were mentioned amongst a plethora of others, Tom and I may have rattled through around 20 players in this segment!

Lastly, we talked about two Championship players that have made the headlines recently; Ryan Sessegnon and James Maddison. Is there a chance we see one or both in the Premier League next season? If so- can they have Dele Alli style impacts on the clubs they move to? I'm sure Football Index traders will have a keen eye one these two over the summer...

  • Episode 29: R Football Index on World Cup £100k Giveaway & Order Books

I met Rfootball Index at the Birmingham trader meet and he wanted to come on to the show to review the announcements made at the meet, and how they could affect the index!

First up we talk about the World Cup competition giveaway where Football Index are giving away £100k in cash prizes! We discuss how it will be beneficial to the platform and for traders in general, but we also weigh up whether or not the money could be put to better use....

Something that was mentioned at the trader meet by their CTO were order books, which would be a huge move for the platform! We talk about how they could be massively beneficial, but also what drawbacks they could have. Will the order books be transparent? Or will they be blind? R tries to explain what they actually are-but we'll have to wait and see just exactly how they work with reference to the index.

Next, we talk about the infamous Footie! What exactly is it? What should FI use as an alternative barometer? No-one really knows what the Footie is, so why is it still being used?

  • Episode 28: La Liga Transfer Special With Football Whispers' Ryan Baldi

First up, Ryan Baldi took a deep dive into Real Madrid's season and their squad. We dissect their struggles in the league, as they went from a 4-4-2 diamond into a 4-3-3, seemingly disrupting the squads rhythm. After reverting to the 4-4-2 that had served them so well at the back end of last year, Isco was absolutely key to their revitalised performances. But will the talented Spaniard stay at the Galacticos beyond this season? Ryan tries to dig into the reasons he could want a route out of Madrid. He's not the only one however, Gareth Bale is constantly linked back to the premier league and you'd think barring a new deal that those links will once again reach fever pitch! Indeed, Ryan believes that this is the summer that the Welshman finally makes his return to England! Alongside these two superstars, we also discuss the futures of Dani Ceballos, Luka Modrić and Toni Kroos!

From the Bernabeu to Valencia, who have been the surprise package in this year's La Liga, must have a few wandering eyes peering at some of their players surely? We talk about the breakout superstar, PSG-owned Goncalo Guedes and his interesting summer ahead! We also discuss coveted talent Carlos Soler, Rodrigo and left-back Jose Gaya.

Next up- we talked about the Football Index elephant in the room-Antoine Griezmann. Barcelona seem to be leading the chase but could he land elsewhere? If he does end up in Catalonia-where do Barcelona raise the cash from following their mega deal with Philippe Coutinho?

Now a question that got a lot of joy on the Bundesliga podcast was whether or not some players in relegated teams could make a transfer away from their respective clubs. It was safe to say that Ryan and I were scraping the barrel! However there were some interesting players on loan returning to their parent club who could make moves away. The likes of Halilović and Lucas Perez could strike up some interest in the summer!

Next up, we look at who are the next players in La Liga to break through like Asensio and Guedes, Ryan had some great shouts!

We then moved on to talk about two players who have been heavily linked with moves away from their respective clubs: Fabian Ruiz and Aaron Martin. The former is a gangly central midfielder with a €30 million buyout clause who plays for Real Betis, and the latter is a talented left-back playing for Espanyol who's highly coveted.

Last but certainly not least, is there any chance of Neymar ACTUALLY leaving PSG for Real Madrid this summer? We discuss this one in great detail....

Ryan has also written a book which he is trying crowd-fund! If you liked what you heard, here's a link to the book: https://unbound.com/books/wonderkids/ It's all about footballers who were hyped during their youth, but never made it at the top level for one reason or another. • Episode 27: Another £100k Portfolio Man Rejoins!

First up, SOTD recaps his Football Index journey, how he fell in love with the product, what made him bet big on the market and why he's as bullish as one can be about the platform.

We didn't only hear about his slightly over-romanticised relationship with the platform, I also dug into what his strategy is. What are his plans over the summer period? What players did he sell or keep during this recent market dip? He's a staunch believer that those transfer linked players that breach the top 3 in media buzz will fly- so we examined why that could be? Just as importantly, we talked about the potential downside of some of these players: how far does a player like Mahrez fall after the transfer window should he stay at Leicester?

A question many traders want answered when the big traders join the show is how they actually structure their portfolios. How has SOTD managed to decrease his downside?

We inevitably talked about some ongoing drops in certain players and SOTD insightfully concluded that a majority of the falls have been very much warranted. We then go on to discuss any advice SOTD had for some of these traders that are panicking greatly!
