  • Senior Related Injuries
Some alarming new numbers reinforce what we already know about how dangerous falls are for seniors.
People in that age group made up over half of injury-related hospitalizations in Canada, according to the Canadian Institute for Health Information. And 4 out of 5 times, this type of hospitalization was due to falls. The second leading cause is because of vehicle collisions.
Libby Znaimer is joined by Geoff Fernie, Senior Scientist at the University Health Network and the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, as well as Nicholas Gnidziejko, Manager of Clinical Administrative Databases Operations at CIHI.

  • Alcohol Consumption
Libby Znaimer is joined by Dr. Catherine Paradis, Senior Research and Policy Analyst at the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction as well as Dr. Kevin Shield, Independent Scientist from CAMH.
How do you feel about giving up drinking altogether? Have you done so? For years there has been a medical debate about whether moderate drinking is good, bad, or has no effect on health. Now, a new study suggests that people — especially women — who give up alcohol can experience better mental health. This is based on data from nearly 10,400 participants in Hong Kong and more than 31,000 participants in the United States. Men and women lifetime abstainers of alcohol reported the highest level of mental well-being at the start of the study, and women who drank moderately saw an improvement in their mental well-being after they quit.
