ABOUT THE GUEST
Barbara StClaire-Ostwald, MA, BSc (Hons) Master Executive Coach, Interculturalist, expert in Trauma Sensitive Coaching and Neuroscience, works with and supports individuals and groups around the World who have been impacted by trauma. By incorporating Trauma Sensitive Practices in their lives her clients learn to let go of the past, avoid getting caught up in worries about the future and experience much deeper connections with others and themselves, so they can live a more regulated, stress-free life.
She has had an interesting career working with International Diplomats, Financial Services i.e. Investment Banking and Asset Management including IFI’s, the UK Civil Service and Government. Barbara has been self-employed as an Interculturalist and Coach since 2005 after graduating from Oxford Brookes University with an MA in Coaching & Mentoring Practices; a former Board Member of APECS (Association for Professional Executive Coaching & Supervision) as International Director, ED&I. In these roles as coach, mentor and supervisor she has promoted sustainability, inclusiveness and safe spaces, supporting her clients through social pressures on decision making and utilising tools such as embodied self-awareness.
Her practice in the field of Trauma Sensitive Coaching and Neuroscience, in which she has been studying and working for some years now, lie deep within her own personal lived experiences of trauma and PTSD including the conditions which have arisen and played a fundamental role in this.
What we can learn from Barbara, a Master Executive Coach & Supervisor, Interculturalist and expert in Trauma Sensitive Coaching and Neuroscience….?
In order for us to learn how to heal and transform our body and our mind, we need a regulated nervous system. Trauma impacts our autonomic nervous system which is in charge of our basic survival stratagems such as our ‘flight, fight, freeze’ survival strategies. Many research articles on stress tell us that stressors have a major influence upon mood, our sense of well-being, behaviour, and health and that unchecked, stress can take a toll on our physiological and psychological conditions which can surface at any point in our lives.
I am developing a new programme to support trauma sufferers like myself, to shift from a dysregulated to a more regulated state of being helping them to let go of the past, to heal their mind and their body and enhance their quality of life.”

In this episode of Overcoming Anxiety, Dawn explores how we create our own reality with the conscious, unconscious and subconscious mind. Discover how we perceive, span and define our own reality by the things we focus on in different moments.
KEY TAKEAWAYS
- We only notice between five and nine things in any one moment. That's our conscious mind, so by definition, we are not noticing a whole host of other things that are going on around us.
- If we are focused on something like a car or a house or a new pair of shoes, that is when we start noticing that what we’re focusing on gets bigger, gets more important and comes into our line of sight, it's there in our thoughts.
- Whilst our conscious mind only sees between five or nine things at any one time, our unconscious mind sees and notices everything. Our subconscious mind is scanning for things that might be dangerous to us.
Remember your feelings and your feeling state in any one moment doesn't define who you are. It's your conscious, unconscious mind pulling up a whole lot of stuff from the past.
BEST MOMENTS
“Why are there so many different interpretations of what is being seen?”
“When we focus on five to nine we then see them more clearly.”
“Our deductions of a situation will be different to someone else who was seeing a different five to nine
other things at the same moment.”
“It’s useful to understand what others may be focusing on in our everyday encounters.”
