Finding Freedom episodes

  • The Fear Response

What happens in our bodies when we are suffering from anxiety? Listen in to this episode to hear Dawn explore and explain the response our body has when we are dealing with anxiety. She talks about the fear response, why this is how our body chooses to respond to stimuli as well as the action we can take to overcome the often learnt behaviours associated with it.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Even just mild anxiety can trigger the fear response. This can also be referred to as the fight, flight, freeze response.
    • The fear response is triggered when the body perceives it is in danger, whether this is necessary or not, a threat is a threat as far as our subconscious minds are concerned. Many things are at play in this in your brain including the hypothalamuses and your hormone controlling pituitary gland.
    • Sometimes you may not even be aware of what has triggered this fear response, it’s your subconscious mind at play. Being able to recognise the physical symptoms, such as your heart rate increasing and digestive issues can help you notice when your body and brain is interpreting anxiety.
    • Many of Dawn’s clients can see and understand their anxiety isn’t logical but that doesn’t help them deal with the response they feel.
    • It can often feel like anxiety can’t be overcome and this is overwhelming. We can react in ways that are embarrassing or even dangerous but these responses are learnt behaviours. The fear response may be innate but our behaviours resulting from the anxiety associated with it aren’t.
    •  If our mind can learn a behaviour then it can also unlearn it and this is the key to freeing us from anxiety, allowing us to live the life we truly want.

    BEST MOMENTS

“Our subconscious minds reacts before our conscious mind”

“Our thinking brain is turned off, it’s absolutely too slow to be helpful in these dangerous situations”

“If our subconscious mind has learnt these things then they can unlearn them. Unpacking the deep beliefs, the rules, understandings and misunderstandings that are held in our subconscious minds reignites a transformational experience which can free us from the clutches of this condition”

  • What is Anxiety?

Welcome to the very first episode of Overcoming Anxiety. Join your host Dawn as she tackles what it is to be human and all the thoughts, emotions and experiences that come with it.

Do you ever feel overwhelmed, stressed and out of control? Do you suffer from feeling your heart racing and become overcome with feelings of guilt and dread? Then you may be suffering from anxiety. In this episode, Dawn delves deep into what anxiety actually is; what is it defined by and how does it make an individual feel. She discusses how it’s part of our brain’s make-up and part of being human but also analyses the many challenges and difficulties that arise when living with high levels of anxiety. Listen in to find out what anxiety is and discover how you can start to take back control to overcome it.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • Anxiety is defined and described in many ways. The dictionary definition talks about it being a feeling of worry, nervousness or unease. It is also described as having a strong desire or concern for something to happen or to do something. As well as a generalised feeling of unease, stress, panic or fear that impacts your everyday life, both physically and mentally.
    • Anxiety initially exists to serve us. It acts as a warning, an alarm type function to warn us or to make us wary when something doesn’t look, sound or feel right.
    • Some people have more control over their feelings of anxiety and can either calm it or ignore it. When anxiety is activated in a normal situation and we react to it in a proportioned way it serves a purpose. However, if it’s something you suffer with when you aren’t in a situation that should cause anxiety or if you are unable to control the feelings then it can become a problem.
    • Dawn has suffered from severe anxiety herself many years ago. She still remembers how it felt, strong feelings of overwhelming guilt, failure and low self-esteem. She is not a doctor but she managed to help herself overcome anxiety and has helped many others like her too.
    • When someone is suffering from anxiety, they can feel a tremendous lack of control as their life is dictated by their subconscious mind reacting to various stimuli.
    • If your worrying affects your everyday life there are things you can do to take action and take back control. It doesn’t have to be who you are or define you and it’s not about deleting anxiety from your life. It’s about reducing the life-limiting effects of high anxiety and replace it with more helpful behaviours and patterns.
    • Understanding how and why your anxiety is triggered and your reactions to it is key in helping promote change. You can educate your subconscious mind to assess situations in a more helpful way. The first step to overcoming anxiety is to start to believe it’s possible.

    BEST MOMENTS

“Anxiety is a normal human reaction to various situations, it’s our internal alarm bell”

“Our subconscious reactions are taking control and we are reacting to them whether we want to or not”

“Anxiety, the debilitating kind you can only truly understand when you’ve lived it and experienced its overwhelming power”

“I didn’t want coping mechanisms, I wanted solutions”

“The first step to overcoming anxiety is to start to believe it’s possible”
