Finding Your Law Firm with Brittny Bottorff

Listen Later

In this episode, Alay and Brittny discuss:
  • Adjusting to leaving a larger firm for a solo or small firm.
  • Finding partners and resources to assist with specific tasks.
  • The benefits and challenges of partnering in your firm.
  • Finding the balance of bringing in and redirecting work.
  •

    Key Takeaways:
    • The bar association has a solo/small firm section which is a great resource for you as a small or solo organization.
    • When starting your own firm, there are two roles we suggest you fill right away: a bookkeeper/accountant and an IT person.
    • Your role in the firm is likely to change as your firm grows and evolves.
    • Even if you don’t want to grow, find the work that brings you personal satisfaction.
    •

      Tweetable Moments:
      • “The biggest challenge was losing my colleagues and losing the staffing support. As a solo, I had to kind of come up with…surrogate work colleagues and surrogate staffing support.” —  Brittny Bottorff
      • “If you find that you’re doing tasks where you have to routinely discount your rate, or write off time…that’s a signal that you might need to hire for that role.” —  Alay Yajnik
      • “You want to make sure you partner with the right person, because it’s a big commitment, and it’s a big undertaking to do together.” —  Brittny Bottorff
      • “If you’re looking to grow your firm, one of the biggest mistakes that I find attorneys make is they wait too long before they hire people. The opposite is also a problem, which is if you hire too early, and you don’t want that either. One of the ways that we help our clients walk that line is the 20/10/5 rule.” —  Alay Yajnik
