  • Missionary Myth Vivian R Palmer Harvey
Missionary Myth Vivian R Palmer Harvey
The Missionary Myth, Through the Eyes of a Missionary Kid tells my story.
    http://www.missionarymyth.com/

Beginning with her birth in Africa, the author tells the fascinating story of her childhood on the mission field. Ironically, the same belief system requiring missionaries to abandon their children to boarding schools also harms the very natives they seek to reach, exploiting children and nations alike. The Missionary Myth opens the door to finding real solutions: challenging the missionary concept, questioning current policies, and reaching out to victims. Boarding school abuse is one branch of a much broader problem, and today’s church begs for constructive critique if it is to maintain an important role for people of faith.

  • Bipolar Disorder Discussion with Dr. Nadine Vaughan
Bipolar disorder is a serious mental illness in which common emotions become intensely and often unpredictably magnified. Individuals with bipolar disorder can quickly swing from extremes of happiness, energy and clarity to sadness, fatigue and confusion. These shifts can be so devastating that individuals may choose suicide.
All people with bipolar disorder have manic episodes — abnormally elevated or irritable moods that last at least a week and impair functioning. But not all become depressed.

  • Kelli Dunham Ex Nun and Now Lesbian and Stand Up Comic
Kelli’s comedy is gently edgy, but she is not afraid to take her quizzical story-telling style into areas where even slam poetry dares not tread: a torn up birth certificate, the perils of responding to extreme sarcasm coming from a dying lover, trying to avoid being gay bashed while wearing a flowered shirt and Stetson cowboy hat in a Jacksonville Florida Denny’s. And while Kelli’s act is many times political it is also deeply deeply personal and often focuses on that magical moment of intersection when the LGBT and non-LGBT worlds meet, or–at times– collide.

  • Everybody Knew Excerpts Read By Michael Clemenger
    http://www.eburypublishing.co.uk/results.asp
    Everybody Knew
A Boy, Two Brothers, A Stolen Childhood
‘Which of us do you prefer?’
As a baby, Michael Clemenger was handed over to the unloving care of a religious-run children’s home. Aged eight, he was transferred to St Joseph’s Industrial School in Tralee, Co. Kerry.
Chosen as their ‘favourite’ by two Christian Brothers, Michael endured years of sexual abuse at the hands of both men. Brother Price would strike at night, while Brother Roberts took his pleasure in a weekly bathtime ritual. And even their ‘protection’ did not save the boy from merciless beatings at the hands of other sadistic Brothers in the notorious institution.
Despite the unbelievable trauma of his early life, Michael emerged unbroken, determined to make something of himself, and also to find the mother he had never known.
A story of remarkable spirit and courage, set against a background of the prejudices and neglect of Irish society in the 1960s.

  • John Trudell
Panel: Nell Cole, David Little Eagle and Russ Letica
Biography-John Trudell is an acclaimed poet, national recording artist, actor and activist whose international following reflects the universal language of his words, work and message. Trudell (Santee Sioux) was a spokesperson for the Indian of All Tribes occupation of Alcatraz Island from 1969 to 1971. He then worked with the American Indian Movement (AIM), serving as Chairman of AIM from 1973 to 1979. In February of 1979, a fire of unknown origin killed Trudell's wife, three children and mother-in-law. It was through this horrific tragedy that Trudell began to find his voice as an artist and poet, writing, in his words, "to stay connected to this reality."
