  • First Love Ep. 74 - Walk Through the Valley, Don't Live There

Show Notes: In this episode, Dr. Robyn Kassas and Dr. Nathan Kassas introduce the Valley Gate, the next gate of Jerusalem in their series through Nehemiah's rebuilding. They explain that the valley is a passage, not an identity, and that it is a place of inspection where God's Spirit goes low enough to see what is broken. Using Nehemiah 2 and 3 and Psalm 23, they note that a shadow implies light and that what God inspects in one season He rebuilds for His glory in another. They compare the valley to a diagnostic room, like an X-ray that finds the root of a break, and say a low environment does not mean a low identity. They also discuss the cause as the key, inward schemas, moving from reaction to response, and looking down from a seated position in Christ.

Hosts: Dr. Robyn Kassas and Dr. Nathan Kassas

Topics Covered: The Valley Gate, Valley as Passage Not Identity, Nehemiah's Inspection, Psalm 23 Shadow of Death, Diagnostic Room, Low Environment vs. Low Identity, Finding the Cause, Schemas, Reaction vs. Response

  • First Love Ep. 73 - The Valley Gate Introduction

Show Notes: In this episode, Dr. Robyn Kassas and Dr. Nathan Kassas conclude the Old Gate and introduce the Valley Gate from Nehemiah, where the movement is downward, not backward. They preview Season Casting 2027, the Hebraic year of Zion, and speak about trauma being stored in the body. Reading Nehemiah 2:13, they describe the Valley Gate as the gate of inspection: has the truth recovered at the Old Gate taken root, and can it be tested in low places? They preview upcoming teaching on the seven valleys, mountains versus valleys, and how the valley exposes coping mechanisms, which they say numb rather than heal. They note that a Sunday message will cover moving from schema to rhema. They close with Psalm 23: we walk through the valley, not live in it.

  • First Love Ep. 72 - From Schema to Rhema: Does It Produce Peace, Is It Teachable, What Identity, What is the Outcome

Show Notes: In this episode, Dr. Robyn Kassas and Dr. Nathan Kassas complete their list of schema and rhema markers. They start with the peace marker, contrasting the peace of God with temporary relief, which comes when a threat is removed, and pointing to Philippians 4 and Jesus asleep in the boat. Next is the humility marker, using Peter's protest in Matthew 16 to show how a schema makes us unteachable. The love marker follows, with 1 Corinthians 13 and John 13:35: a rhema never produces cruelty, pride, or suspicion. Then comes the identity marker, using Jeremiah 1:5, 2 Corinthians 5:17, and Gideon's false humility. The outcome marker, with Mary's surrender, contrasts obedience with self-protection. A schema says my past has spoken; a rhema says God said, and it brings the old interpretation under the authority of God's Word.

  • First Love Ep. 71 - From Schema to Rhema: Can It Be Tested, Who Is In Control

Show Notes: In this episode, Dr. Robyn Kassas and Dr. Nathan Kassas continue identifying markers that separate a rhema from a schema, beginning with the control marker: does this require manipulation, deception, or pressure to make it happen? They discuss how a trigger activates a schema, how Saul dressed up disobedience in spiritual language, and how James 3:17 describes wisdom as willing to yield. They share the practice of inviting Jesus into their own self-talk, and connect it to Adam and Eve's imagination being opened. Next comes the testing marker: what God blesses, He tests. Citing 1 John 4:1, Proverbs, and Peter's vision at Simon the Tanner's house, they explain why a multitude of counselors matters and why no one has every gift, since a schema claims to have every answer while a rhema is willing to yield.

Hosts: Dr. Robyn Kassas and Dr. Nathan Kassas

  • First Love Ep. 70 - From Schema to Rhema: What Does the Word Say, What Is the Fruit

Show Notes: In this episode, Dr. Robyn Kassas and Dr. Nathan Kassas continue their schema and rhema markers with the scripture marker and the fruit marker. A true rhema never contradicts the inspired written Word, and they contrast discernment with debate, pointing to Jesus answering the tempter with what is written. They discuss context over isolated verses, and they affirm that God's truth and love do not change. The fruit marker sets the fruits of the Spirit against the fruits of a schema: urgency, suspicion, accusation, control, secrecy, self-protection, and emotional certainty without humility. Citing James and John's request to call down fire, they warn against using spiritual language to justify retaliation or superiority. They close by noting the enemy wants us rehearsing the past, and by describing the double-edged blade of logos and rhema.

Hosts: Dr. Robyn Kassas and Dr. Nathan Kassas

  • First Love Ep. 69 - From Schema to Rhema, What is the Source

Show Notes: In this episode, Dr. Robyn Kassas and Dr. Nathan Kassas close out their look at the Old Gate and introduce the first of several markers for telling a schema from a rhema. They recall that Paul's word in Romans 12 for being conformed shares its root with schema, and that the gates of Nehemiah represent conversations in the believer's journey, with the Valley Gate coming next. The first marker is the source: did this begin in fear or in God? God does not birth anything through fear, and a schema feels powerful because it is familiar. Using 2 Timothy 1:7 and the story of Saul, who let a word about David become a schema through fear of being replaced, they show why we must examine the fruit. They preview the scripture marker for the next episode.

Hosts: Dr. Robyn Kassas and Dr. Nathan Kassas

  • First Love Ep. 68 - The Old Gate: From A Schema to a Dreamer Via His Rhema

Show Notes: In this episode, Dr. Robyn Kassas and Dr. Nathan Kassas conclude their Old Gate series by focusing on the rhema. From Romans 10:17 they explain that the "word" is the Greek rhema, God's spoken word, which brings faith where a schema brings prediction. Joseph is the model of a dreamer who learned to interpret by God's rhema. They give markers for discerning it: a rhema that makes you less like Jesus is not His voice, it interrupts appetite (Matthew 4:4), it acts as the sword of the Spirit, and it overrides experience, as with Peter's net. Rhema is flexible, while scheming is rigid. They close by walking through the full process from experience to schema to scheme, and from interruption to renewal.

Hosts: Dr. Robyn Kassas and Dr. Nathan Kassas

  • First Love Ep. 67 - The Old Gate: The Law, Love That Interrupts Our Scheming

Show Notes: In this episode, Dr. Robyn Kassas and Dr. Nathan Kassas continue examining scheming and how God replaces it with His rhema, turning a schemer into a dreamer. Jacob's story is the main example: he dreams at Bethel yet interprets the dream through a scheme, until God wrestles him at Peniel and changes his name to Israel. They discuss Rebekah's fear that the word would fail, how manipulation replaces trust, and that God moves rather than maneuvers. Sometimes the behavior we use to protect ourselves prevents a schema from being disproven. The law interrupts scheming because it is love aligning us with His will. The rhema invites us to pause and not stop at the first interpretation, since interpretation belongs to the Lord.

Hosts: Dr. Robyn Kassas and Dr. Nathan Kassas

Topics Covered: Scheming vs. Dreaming, Jacob at Bethel and Peniel, Name Change to Israel, Rebekah's Manipulation, God Moves Not Maneuvers, Law Interrupts Scheming, Interpretation Belongs to God, Rhema Dreamer

  • First Love Ep. 66 - The Old Gate: Schemas Lead to Scheming

Show Notes: In this episode, Dr. Robyn Kassas and Dr. Nathan Kassas explain how a schema becomes a scheme: the schema interprets, the prediction anticipates, and the scheme tries to control the outcome. Using examples of abandonment, mistrust, and powerlessness, they show how a distorted map produces distorted strategies. Sarah's plan to give Hagar to Abraham and Saul's pursuit of David illustrate schemes that interfere with God's dream. They describe how the body's threat response can become false evidence for a schema, and how control is often mistaken for safety. Doing whatever fear demands pulls us from intimacy into performance. God's rhema brings truth about the situation, calls us rather than predicts, and leads us to be dreamers, not schemers.

Hosts: Dr. Robyn Kassas and Dr. Nathan Kassas

  • First Love Ep. 65 - The Old Gate: Schemas, Your Interpretation Isn't God's Revelation

Show Notes: In this episode, Dr. Robyn Kassas and Dr. Nathan Kassas continue the Old Gate series, saying Christians are often taught to put off but not to put on. They connect Ephesians 4:22 to Jesus laying aside His deity and being crowned, and to the priest's garments on the Day of Atonement. Focusing on sin makes us less focused on Him; small daily victories matter. They explain how confirmation bias and attention bias reinforce a schema, and that evidence gathered through a wounded lens can testify to a lie. With Isaiah 55, they say God cannot be fit into our framework. Gideon and Peter show that we can switch from a schema to a rhema. Fear is control dressed up, and the law is love aligning us with His will.
