Ein neuer Monat, ein neues Jubiläum! Im Oktober feiert die Ubuntu-Community das 20-jährige Bestehen der Distribution - und auch wir feiern zusammen mit Torsten Franz. Ubuntu hat es sich 2004 zur Aufgabe gemacht, ein Betriebssystem zu werden, das von allen benutzt werden kann und hat somit viel für die Verbreitung von Linux auf dem Desktop getan. Neben der frühen Geschichte von Mark Shuttleworths wohl bekanntesten Projekt besprechen wir auch zahlreiche Highlights vergangener Versionen, zwischenzeitlich vergessener Software und natürlich unsere persönlichen Anekdoten.

Elasticsearch wechselt wieder zu einer Open Source-Lizenz, gleichzeitig ist die zukünftige Pflege der Linux-Manpages ungewiss. Fedora 41 Beta, Ubuntu 24.04.1 und GNOME 47 erscheinen. VirtualBox 7.1 steht im Schatten einer großen Lizenzänderung und mit HeliumOS gibt es eine neue Distribution.

Die Community freut sich über die erste Alpha von Pop!_OS 24.04, die auch den COSMIC-Desktop enthält. Die Fedora-Community stellt mit Ramalama ein weiteres KI-Werkzeug vor während Manjaro an einem Immutable-Ableger arbeitet.

Im Juli sorgten gleich zwei SSH-Bugs für Aufsehen. SUSE Manager 5.0 und openSUSE Leap Micro 6.0 sind erschienen, während CentOS 7 endgültig eingestellt wurde. Weitere Backup-Softwarehersteller planen Proxmox-Support und NVIDIA meldet sich nach längerer Zeit mit neuen Treiber-Neuigkeiten. Firefox 128 verärgert mit einer neuen Standard-Einstellung, das openSUSE-Projekt diskutiert lebhaft ein Rebranding. Canonical will Docker-Container zukünftig bis zu 12 Jahre unterstützen, während FreeBSD den Supportzyklus verkürzt.
