Today is the Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. Jesus reveals His true nature to Peter, James and John so that they would have the strength and the courage and the faith to endure the challenges they would soon face. God always wants to encourage us. So as you celebrate this feast, thank God for His mercy, that He would reveal and give strength and courage to us.

Today’s Gospel tells of Jesus healing a woman’s daughter who was possessed by a demon. Jesus’ disciples had asked him to send the woman away, for she kept calling out. But she did not give up. Do we persist in prayer in the same way, even in the face of hardship?

In today’s Gospel, the Pharisees ask Jesus why His disciples do not adhere to tenants of the Mosaic law. They were so focused on observing the hundreds of precepts of the law, all they could do was point out when others were not following it. The Pharisees were blind guides of the blind. Is there blindness in you? Are you doing good things for the wrong reasons? Are you bound by your blindness?

In today’s Gospel, the disciples are out fishing when a great storm arises. They look out across the waters and see Jesus walking towards them, and He calls on Peter to walk toward him. Throughout this passage, we see how Jesus wants us to overcome our fears. Many times in our lives, we will face violent storms. We may feel like God is not there or He does not care – but he does! Cry out to the Lord in times of trouble and He will hear you.

What will separate us from the love of Christ? This is the question St. Paul poses to us in this Sunday’s Second Reading. His answer is immediate – nothing in this world, neither life nor death, can separate us from the Love of Christ. We are all facing trials in our lives right now and the world is full of suffering. Will we allow these things to draw us away? Or will we use this opportunity to run to the Lord?

In today’s Gospel Jesus compares the Kingdom of Heaven to a mustard seed, and to yeast mixed in with flour. The mustard seed, the smallest of all seeds, grows into a large bush. With yeast, the entire batch of flour is leavened. It is the same in our lives – when our faith is activated, God is able to do great things with us. Ask God to give you the grace each day to follow Him and bear great fruit.

In this Sunday’s Gospel, Jesus continues to give us illustrations of the Kingdom of Heaven. He compares the Kingdom to a pearl of great price. The merchant sells all he has to buy the field where the pearl is. Do we do this in our lives? Do we rid ourselves of distractions that stop of from pursuing the riches of God?

In today’s Gospel, the disciples ask Jesus why he speaks to the crowds using parables. He tells them that the knowledge of the Kingdom of Heaven has not yet been granted to the people, even though it has been granted to the disciples. Why were they entrusted with this knowledge? Because they made the choice to step away from their lives and follow Jesus. They could hear the Word of God because their hearts were ready to receive it. Are our hearts ready as well?
