Forgotten Cinema episodes

  • Now Showing - The Accountant 2

Must be summer movie season because here's another Now Showing episode of Forgotten Cinema! Mike Butler and Mike Field team up like Ben Affleck and Jon Bernthal for "The Accountant 2" (2025).

Mike Field and Mike Butler both dig this one. From the brother comedy coming from leads Affleck and Bernthal, to the action throughout. The Mikes definitely recommend you check this out as a good kick-start to the summer movie season and as a type of mid budget, more personal action film that you don't normally get to see on the big screen anymore.

So, grab your popcorn and soda, please notice the exits to the left and right of you and settle down for Forgotten Cinema.

  • Death to Smoochy

It flopped at the box office and critics tore it apart, but the Mikes are here to give "Death to Smoochy" the love it deserves.

In this episode, join Mike Field and Mike Butler as they dive into Danny DeVito's darkly absurd comedy and explore why it actually holds up better than some people remember and became a cult classic. From Robin Williams' unhinged Rainbow Randolph to Ed Norton's squeaky-clean Smoochy the Rhino, there's a lot to appreciate in this twisted tale of children's TV gone corporate and corrupt. The Mikes talk performances, DeVito’s sharp direction, and why they both think this film deserves a second chance.

So, grab your popcorn and soda, please notice the exits to the left and right of you and settle down for Forgotten Cinema.

Jordan and Hailee Steinfeld and newcomer Miles Caton, Sinners delivers a fresh take on the vampire genre. But does it have the bite to stand among the greats? • Narc

This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes go undercover with Ray Liotta and Jason Patric in Narc (2002), written and directed by Joe Carnahan. While the performances are intense and the energy raw, the central mystery feels a bit thin, and the early 2000s grit doesn't quite hit the same over 20 years later. Is this a case worth reopening, or should it stay in the cold case files?

Join Mike Field and Mike Butler as they break down what works, what doesn’t, and why Liotta might be the best part of this moody crime thriller.

So, grab your popcorn and soda, please notice the exits to the left and right of you and settle down for Forgotten Cinema.

  • The Firm

The Mikes head to Memphis to revisit the 1993 legal thriller The Firm, starring Tom Cruise and the late, great Gene Hackman.

Join Mike Field and Mike Butler as they dive into this twisty tale of ambition, corruption, and contract law—with some very aggressive nondisclosure agreements. Field can’t get over the fact that Wilford Brimley, America’s oatmeal-loving grandpa, plays a terrifying heavy who actually gets the crap kicked out of him. Butler’s more focused on Cruise doing peak early-90s sprinting.

It's a John Grisham adaptation soaked in suspense, shady deals, and surprisingly intense library scenes. Is The Firm still worth the retainer fee after all these years? Or is it time to dissolve this one from your movie memory?

  • Teaching Mrs. Tingle

This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes head back to the turn of the millennium to team up with Katie Holmes and kidnap Hellen Mirren as they discuss "Teaching Mrs. Tingle" (1999), written and directed by Kevin Williamson.

Mike Field and Mike Butler talk about how the film "screams" late-90s/early-2000s with its tone, cast, and style, but also dig into why it doesn’t quite live up to its potential due to rewrites and a variety of issues. Could it have been a sharp teen thriller? Did it hold back too much? And is Helen Mirren just doing her best with what she was given?

  • A Perfect World

The Mikes are being held hostage by a charming yet murderous Kevin Costner, but it's okay, because Clint Eastwood is on his trail! But does "A Perfect World"(1993) fully come together, or does it feel just a little… incomplete?

This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mike Field and Mike Butler are discussing "A Perfect World" (1993). Listen in as they take a look at this underrated crime drama starring Kevin Costner as an escaped convict who forms an unlikely bond with a kidnapped boy, all while being pursued by Clint Eastwood’s Texas Ranger. Both Field and Butler like this film, but they do have a few issues with it which Butler supposes may have been inadvertently due to a request by Costner.

Oh, and did you know Costner actually got called out by Eastwood on set? They’ll tell you what happened and what it says about these two Hollywood legends.

  • The One

It's Jet Li vs. Jet Li in a battle across the multiverse! But is "The One" (2001) an early 2000s sci-fi action gem or just a missed opportunity?

This week on Forgotten Cinema, we’re diving into this high-energy, multiverse "Highlander" where Jet Li takes on alternate versions of himself to become…well, The One. It’s got slow-mo, bad CGI, early 2000s rock, and—believe it or not—Jason Statham with hair!

Listen in as The Mikes discuss the many, many issues with the film. Mike Butler has some nostalgia for its early 00's vibes, but Mike Field? Not so much. They break down the highs, but mostly the lows, and whether this film deserves another watch in today’s world of multiverse madness.

So, grab your popcorn and soda, please notice the exits to the left and right of you and settle down for Forgotten Cinema.

  • A Walk Among the Tombstones

Liam Neeson, a gritty mystery, and some seriously dark twists… This week on Forgotten Cinema, The Mikes are diving into A Walk Among the Tombstones (2014), a neo-noir thriller that puts Neeson in full detective mode; a nice change of pace in the middle of his semi-annual action fare.

Join Mike Field and Mike Butler as break down the film’s unique tone, how it plays with tropes, and how good David Harbour is as a deranged psychopath. They'll also cover a bit of the films history from popular Matthew Scudder book series to Hollywood film.

So, grab your popcorn and soda, please notice the exits to the left and right of you and settle down for Forgotten Cinema.

What do you think? Did this deserve more sequels following the books it was based on or was it just another generic Neeson film of the 2010s? Let us know in the comments!
