Four more movies. Four more verdicts.

This week: Glen Powell murdering his way to a family fortune in a black comedy that's almost there, Vince Vaughn and James Marsden time-traveling to fix a gangster problem (don't overthink the science), a zombie musical that's fun but no Shaun of the Dead, and Chris Hemsworth pulling one last heist in a movie that wants to be Heat — and gets pretty close, but not close enough.

  • Gung Ho

This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes take on "Gung Ho", the workplace comedy that blends culture clash with 80s charm.

Both Mike Butler and Mike Field enjoy the film for its humor and overall fun factor, but they agree it comes with some noticeable issues. Michael Keaton carries the movie almost entirely on charisma and charm, as his character does not have a particularly strong arc and seems to change in the third act simply because the story demands it, rather than earning that growth.

The Mikes also take issue with George Wendt’s character, who comes off as one of the film’s true villains. He is consistently ungrateful and disruptive, yet faces no real consequences and does not learn any meaningful lesson by the end. In contrast, Kazihiro is a much more compelling character, someone you want to root for, though the film leaves a lot of his personal story unexplored, especially when it comes to his family and transition to life in the United States.

The ending is another sticking point. Instead of feeling earned, it leans on a convenient resolution where characters essentially pretend success into existence, rather than working toward a believable payoff. Still, the Mikes acknowledge that this may partly come down to modern expectations. Looking back at a film from a simpler era, where the focus was more on comedy than airtight storytelling, changes how it lands today.

Despite its flaws, "Gung Ho" remains an enjoyable and easy watch, driven by Keaton’s performance and a steady stream of laughs.

What's your favorite 80's workplace comedy?

  • Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes travel to Savannah with "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil", Clint Eastwood’s atmospheric crime drama steeped in Southern culture and myth.

Both Mike Butler and Mike Field enjoy the film, though they agree it is not without its shortcomings. The story could have benefited from spending more time with Jude Law’s character, as well as further developing the relationship between John Cusack and Kevin Spacey’s characters. Without that added depth, parts of the film risk feeling distant and a bit underdeveloped.

What keeps the film engaging is Eastwood’s steady direction and eye for tone. He leans into the unique personality of Savannah, allowing its culture, folklore, and eccentric characters to bring life to what might otherwise feel like an overly long and dry crime drama. A standout element is the inclusion of Lady Chablis as herself, delivering a memorable and charismatic performance that adds both authenticity and energy.

While it may not fully realize all of its character potential, "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil" remains a compelling and worthwhile watch thanks to its atmosphere, performances, and sense of place.

  • Secondhand Lions

This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes revisit "Secondhand Lions", the heartfelt coming-of-age story that blends tall tales, family, and a whole lot of charm.

Mike Butler and Mike Field really enjoy this film, especially for its message and Robert Duvall's performance, who brings warmth, humor, and gravitas to the role. The movie’s themes about storytelling, masculinity, and choosing what to believe in life resonate strongly, giving the film a lasting emotional core.

That said, the film is not without its flaws. Both Mikes take issue with the ending, including both the reshot version and the original intent, feeling that neither fully sticks the landing. Field also has some concerns with Haley Joel Osment’s performance in certain scenes, wondering if the direction may not have fully supported what the character needed.

Even with those criticisms, "Secondhand Lions" remains a charming and memorable film that is easy to recommend. It may not be perfect, but its heart, performances, and message make it a story worth revisiting.

  • Gravity

This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes head into orbit with "Gravity", the Audience Choice winner for this season.

Both Mike Butler and Mike Field really enjoy the film, and it is easy to see why it earned the audience vote. While it may not hit quite the same heights as that first IMAX 3D experience, "Gravity" still holds up as an intense and visually stunning survival story.

Sandra Bullock carries the film almost entirely on her own, delivering a performance that keeps the tension grounded and the stakes personal. George Clooney adds a memorable and charismatic presence that helps balance the film’s more intense moments.

The Mikes do have a couple of small nitpicks. Butler feels the film loses a bit of momentum toward the end of the second act, and Field is not a big fan of the repeated space station problem Bullock’s character has to face. Still, these are minor issues in an otherwise gripping and well-crafted film.

Tense, immersive, and technically impressive, "Gravity" remains a standout survival story and a deserving Audience Choice selection.

  • Project Hail Mary - Now Showing

Join Mike Butler and Mike Field as they take a journey through space with Ryan Gosling and a talking rock and discuss the new smash hit sci-fi film "Project Hail Mary"!

The Mikes (especially Butler) will discuss how much they love the film. Butler uses the word phenomenal a lot. They will though, talk about some issues they had with the film, regarding the hero's journey story being told and how a twist at the very end should maybe have happened a tad earlier in the film.

Overall though, this is an excellent film, and the Mikes recommend everyone who wants to see an uplifting film that celebrates friendship and science go see "Project Hail Mary" in theaters!

  • Soapdish

This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes dive into "Soapdish", the fast-paced comedy that pulls back the curtain on the chaotic world of daytime television.

Both Mike Butler and Mike Field thoroughly enjoy this one. The cast is firing on all cylinders, with Kevin Kline and Sally Field delivering especially standout performances. The film is sharp, funny, and constantly entertaining, embracing the absurdity of soap operas while still celebrating what made them such a huge cultural force at the time.

That said, the movie’s biggest strength may also be its biggest hurdle for modern audiences. Soap operas are no longer the dominant force they once were on American televisions, which may make some of the satire feel a bit dated. Even so, the humor, performances, and meta storytelling still land.

By building a soap opera within the making of a soap opera, "Soapdish" creates a layered, self-aware comedy that remains a great time from start to finish.

Four movies. One week. Here's what was worth your time — and what wasn't. This week: a James Brooks comedy-drama that can't quite figure out what it's about, Jason Statham doing exactly what Jason Statham does (and delivering), a Nuremberg trials drama with Russell Crowe having a blast and Rami Malek in a completely different movie, and Les Misérables — because sometimes you just end up watching Les Misérables.

  • Changing Lanes

This week on Forgotten Cinema, the Mikes revisit "Changing Lanes", the early 2000s drama built around one bad day and two men whose lives collide in all the worst ways.

Mike Butler remembers enjoying this film the first time around, and on rewatch there is still a lot to like. The dual protagonist structure, where each man also serves as the other’s antagonist, creates an interesting dynamic. Samuel L. Jackson and Ben Affleck both deliver strong performances, bringing intensity and humanity to characters pushed to their limits.

Mike Field also appreciates the performances and the decision to treat this concept as a grounded drama rather than a more conventional action thriller. However, he finds the dual main character setup distracting, making it harder to fully invest in either character’s journey.

Both Mikes agree the film is not without its flaws. There are noticeable contrivances, and the resolution leans a bit too conveniently toward a tidy ending. Butler also feels Affleck’s character could have used more development, particularly in showing what drives him toward the darker choices he begins to make.

Even with those issues, "Changing Lanes" remains a compelling and thoughtful early-2000s drama, anchored by strong performances and a premise that still resonates.
