    Bible: Philippians 3:7-19

Overview: In this passage, the apostle Paul had suffered the loss of all things and counted them but dung. How do you view suffering and Christianity- What has your Christianity cost you- This passage breaks down into questions----How much does it cost for a man to know Christ- -3-7-8---Why would anybody pay such a cost- -3-9-11---What does it look like to pay such a cost in our lives- -3-12-16-----If we are willing to lose, we will have great gain. If we are not will to lose, we will have no reward----1. the cost -3-7-8---The cost is everything. We can make no bargain with God to lower the rate. If you find your life you will loose it -Matthew 10-39-. You have to loose to gain and find Christ and life. The things Paul talks about are his family and national heritage. He was a Pharisee and was in line to be in a very powerful in his nation. Yet he counted it all as something to be forever lost.----2. the answer -3-9-11---Christ is worth so much that Paul was willing to loose everything. What value do you put on the Lord Jesus- The value you find will be measured by what you are willing to give up. The reward far exceeds the loss. What did Paul see in the Lord Jesus that was worth so much- He saw the gift of righteousness which was of God by faith in Christ. He saw a resurrection to a newness of life. There is a resurrection of the soul through a new birth and the hope of the resurrection of the body----3. the application -3-12-16---Press forward to attain what Chrsit has apprehended you for--Forget the things which are behind--What is most important for our children- getting a college education- a stable career- are we raising professionals- Or are we raising missionaries-

  • The True Mary

    Title: The True Mary
    Subtitle: The Book of Luke
    Speaker: Dr. Stephen Pollock
Broadcaster: Free Presbyterian Church of Malvern
    Event: Sunday - AM
    Date: 6/10/2018
    Bible: Luke 1:30-31
    Length: 48 min.

Overview: The Roman Catholic Church has it so wrong when it comes to this passage and their view of Mary. They exalt Mary so much that there is Mariology and Mariolatry. They have so venerated Mary that she becomes superior to her son. We must assert that we will have nothing to do with these teachings. There are further errors like the Assumption of Mary and the Immaculate Conception of Mary. They see her as a co-Redemptrix, playing a vital role in the salvation of individuals. Love makes errors known and warns people that if they believe these things, they will be lost for all eternity. These errors are not consistent with the teaching of Luke. Yet we must not overreact to the errors and deny the truth about Mary. She is in glory. She did play an unusual role in God's work of redemption. We admire God's work in her without engaging in Mariology. We want to look at the visitation of Mary from two perspectives----1. a historical event for mankind--These verses record a historical event that is part of God's eternal plan for mankind--Luke is acting as a precise historian. This was a unique day for Mary and the history of mankind -1-26-. It is part of the unfolding of God's eternal plan of redemption. This scene is the unfolding of Genesis 3-15.--- setting the scene- the messenger comes--- surveying the scene- Mary finds grace--- summary of salvation in the scene- the Messiah will come to rule as King over His people----2. a personal event for Mary--We all have some role to play a role in God's work of redemption.--Mary is privileged--Mary faced perplexity--Mary is an example of grace--Mary embraced the gospel

    Subtitle: 40th Anniversary Services
    Speaker: Rev. John Greer

    Event: Special Meeting
    Date: 6/5/2018
    Bible: Romans 8:28-39
    Length: 73 min.

Overview: In this message, we look at God's work concerning his people laid out in Romans. He foreknew, predestinated, called, justified, and glorified them. These things lead us to the question- -What shall we then say to these things-- -v. 31a- Then, there 5 more questions that follow after the main question and are the answer to the main question. The questions can be seen through 5 headings.----1. An uncomparable person---If God be for us, who can be against us-- -v. 31b- God cannot be conquered, therefore His people cannot be conquered. No one can be against us.----2. An unlimited provision---He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things-- -v. 32- God will give us all that we need because he already gave us the unlimited provision, His Son.----3. An unchangeable possession---Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect-- -v. 33- No one can accuse us of unrighteousness because Christ has made us righteous. We hold that unchangeable protection of God from the accusations of the devil. God sees us as he sees his own dear Son.----4. An unchallengeable priesthood---Who is he that condemneth-- -v. 34- Christ accomplished a complete and finished work that God is pleased with. Therefore, none can challenge what he has done by condemning us.----5. An unbreakable promise---Who shall separate us from the love of Christ- shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword-- -v. 35- God loves us because Christ was given for us. Christ's work can never be undone, so we cannot be separated from His love.

  • Life In The Flesh Or The Spirit

Title: Life In The Flesh Or The Spirit
    Subtitle: The Book of Romans
    Speaker: Dr. Stephen Pollock
Broadcaster: Free Presbyterian Church of Malvern
    Event: Sunday - PM
    Date: 5/27/2018
    Bible: Romans 8:9-12
    Length: 49 min.

Overview: When reading verses 9 through 12 of Romans 8, 6 matters can be seen that arise from this text.----1. The peril that is indicated--The peril indicated is death. This is not referring to the putting to death of the flesh or physical death. Paul is referring to eternal death here. If we live in the flesh, we will receive eternal separation and torment from God in hell with the devil and his angels.----2. The promise that is offered--However, there is a promise and it is life. If we put the deeds of the flesh to death, we will live.----3. Two problems that are implied--- Does this text teach eternal salvation by works---The answer is no. Paul is emphasizing the reality of true saving faith.--- Is there a contradiction between the phrases -no condemnation- and -ye shall die----The answer is no. Those who know no condemnation do not live after the flesh.----4. Two principles that are assumed--- true believers do not live after the flesh--- all who profess faith in the visible church might not possess faith----5. The practice that is encouraged--The practice is putting to death the deeds of the body. We must go to extreme measures in order to stop feeding our sin.----6. The power that is required--In order to mortify the deeds of the flesh, we need the power of the Spirit. We in ourselves are nothing. But with the Spirit, we can win the battle against our flesh.

  • That Thou Mightest Know
A new MP3 sermon from Free Presbyterian Church of Malvern is now available on SermonAudio.com with the following details:

    Title: That Thou Mightest Know
    Subtitle: The Book of Luke
    Speaker: Dr. Stephen Pollock
Broadcaster: Free Presbyterian Church of Malvern
    Event: Sunday - AM
    Date: 5/20/2018
    Bible: Luke 1:1-4
    Length: 49 min.

Overview: The Gospels are full of surprises. They are old but ever new. The God of heaven wants us to know clearly the facts of the earthly life of Christ. We must never grow weary in being reminded of these truths. The Word of God tells us that you must know Christ, believe on Christ and turn from your sins to be saved. Knowing Christ is vital for souls of the lost and the saved. Here we make some introductory remarks about the gospel of Luke.----1. reason for the gospel- to believe the truth about Christ----Luke seeks to convince people of the truth of Christ as others have done.----1a. author- Luke--The author of Luke is not named but it is accepted that Luke wrote the gospel of Luke--Col 4-14 - Luke is the beloved physician. He is loved of Paul and the Lord--2 Timothy 4-11 - Luke remained loyal to Paul when Demas departed Paul--Philemon 24 - Luke is a fellow-laborer----1b. recipient- Theophilus--Little is known about him. It seems like he was a nobleman, probably a Gentile. He was somebody that needed to know the things of Christ better----1c. method- investigation---understanding- is knowledge gained by careful investigation. Facts are important for faith to begin and grow. Don't treat facts carelessly. We get insight on inspiration. The word of God was at times dictated but here we see Luke investigating to put forth facts. Luke is giving history. The doctrine of inspiration does not remove the agency of men. Luke wrote with care and persuasion. He is not a disinterested historian. He is seeking to convince his readers that the gospel is true.----2. themes in the gospel--Christ was promised of old -2-25---Christ is for people -the prodigal son---Christ had a passion -22-44-

Eternal life is our future expectation--There is a time when we will have incorruptible spiritual bodies.----The issue of assurance is a continual struggle for the people of God. • Fasting For Elders - pt 2
A new MP3 sermon from Free Presbyterian Church of Malvern is now available on SermonAudio.com with the following details:

Title: Fasting For Elders - pt 2
    Subtitle: Elders
    Speaker: Dr. Stephen Pollock
Broadcaster: Free Presbyterian Church of Malvern
    Event: Sunday - AM
    Date: 5/13/2018
    Bible: 2 Chronicles 20:3-4
    Length: 40 min.

Overview: We seek to elect elders. We don't enter into this task lightly. We don't elect men just for the sake of electing men. We want to elect men that are called of God. We see in Scripture that there are special times for fasting and prayer. Jehoshaphat proclaimed a fast here in 2 Chronicles. Prior to the appointment of the twelve apostles, Christ spent the night in prayer. We saw in the last message that fasting was associated not just with the absence of food, but also with the accompaniment of prayer. Today, we want to think about dangers, delight and directives in fasting.----1. The dangers in fasting--1a. the danger of using fasting to win favor with God----We think by doing these things that we will earn favor with God. Recall the Pharisee boasted that he fasted twice a week----1b. the danger of using fasting to win the approval of man--your motivation--Matthew 6-16 - they disfigure their faces that they may appear to fast.----1c. the danger of fasting when not being right with God--Matt 6-1, 5, 16 - there is a challenge that you are not to give or pray or fast like the hypocrites do.--Jer 14-12 - when they fast, I will not haer thier cry--Isaiah 58-3-7 - the people are saying we fasted and we see no outcome. The fasting that God wanted was that they would repent and have hearts right before God. Do not use external practice of religion to hide a wicked heart.----1d. the danger of a superstitious use of fasting--We can't use fasting to force God to do our will----2. The delight in fasting.--Fasting can mean a fattening of our souls--It directs us to depend on God----3. The directives in fasting--For health you might not fast--Avoid pride--Length varies--Be contrite

  • Fasting For Elders - pt 1
A new MP3 sermon from Free Presbyterian Church of Malvern is now available on SermonAudio.com with the following details:

Title: Fasting For Elders - pt 1
    Subtitle: Elders
    Speaker: Dr. Stephen Pollock
Broadcaster: Free Presbyterian Church of Malvern
    Event: Sunday - AM
    Date: 5/6/2018
    Bible: Acts 13:1-4
    Length: 42 min.

Overview: The Old Testament originally required one day of fasting and it was on the Day of Atonement. The practice would eventually become corrupted by the Pharisees. As the New Testament church appointed elders, they did so in the context of fasting and prayer. We therefore want to look at the subject of fasting.----1. the description of fasting--- Fasting involves abstaining from food -Mat 15-23------ Fasting involves an association with prayer -Ester 4-16- 2 Chr 20-3- Ezra 8-21,23---Fasting involves more than just not eating or drinking. Fasting that is spiritual does not occur without accompanying prayer. It involves people afflicting their souls to seek a right way. Fasting does not bend the arm of God behind his back. It is a humbling of ourselves before God so that we will find His way----- Fasting involves afflicting the soul -Psalm 35-11---This verse ties fasting with a humbling of the soul. Fasting can be physical but not spiritual. We can fast without our hearts being involved. We want the inner man involved.--Fasting should involve a humbling ourselves before God as we pray and seek God for His will to be done.----2. the duty of fasting -Matthew 9-14-15---There was a time when the disciples did not mourning. They were not sinning by not fasting. There would be a time when they would as we see in Acts -13-3- 14-23-. Fasting is a voluntary action on the part of believers but Christ assumes they will fast -Matthew 6-17-----3. the reasons for fasting--- corporate sin -Nehemiah 9- Jonah 3---- personal sin -Ahab rebuked by Elijah in 1 King 21-27---- national crisis -Esther, Joel 2---- stubborn resistance to Christ's kingly reign -Mat 17-21---- special seasons -Acts 14-23-
