    Bible: Joshua 8:30-35
    Length: 43 min.

Overview: The Israelites are receiving promises. The land was promised and is now taken. In Genesis 12 up through Joshua, the physical promises are to be seen in light of spiritual truths and realities. The land was to be set apart for the worship of the Lord. It was a physical possession but it was a possession with a purpose. We see Joshua building an altar. This is a foreshadowing of the eternal state. The land given to Abraham finds its ultimate fulfillment in the new heaven and new earth. That promised possession is to be a place where the Lord is worshiped. Don't go so far that you forget your purpose- worship and obedience. ----1. the event--1a. precept governing the event--As it is written in the book of the law of Moses... -8-31-. All these things were done because of the commands given by Moses.--1b. place of event--This was between Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal. These places most likely were near Shechem which is the place where Abraham received the promises -Gen 12-6-. Jacob's visit to Shechem illustrates the theme of land, possession and worship -Gen 33-18-20-.--1c. parts of the event--- altar built--altar points to Calvary and the gospel--- altar used--the burnt offerings point to Christ--- people blessed--- Word written--- Word read--1d. people in the event--all the word was for all the people, including the little ones--1e. purpose of event--rejoice with thankfulness--renewal of covenant----2. key thought--we see an example of public worship----3. application--- worship is an act of obedience--- worship demands an attitude of reverence--- worship requires approach by sacrifice--- worship involves relaying the unchanging word--- worship expresses our hearts unto God

  • The God Who Restores

    Title: The God Who Restores
    Subtitle: The Book of Joshua
    Speaker: Dr. Stephen Pollock
Broadcaster: Free Presbyterian Church of Malvern
    Event: Sunday - AM
    Date: 9/10/2017
    Bible: Joshua 8
    Length: 41 min.

Overview: Joshua 7 saw defeat and discouragement. By the end of Joshua 8, we have victory and rejoicing. Joshua 7 saw God's wrath against his people. In Joshua 8, God's wrath is on the rebellious people of Ai. There is a change in Joshua 8. We start out with God's word of restoration- -Fear not...- This hearkens back to the words of Joshua 1-8. The word of the Lord can lift our despondent spirits. God expects courage and confidence. Courage and confidence lead us to activity. This chapter stands as a lesson on how to come out of fear and dismay and be restored to service to God. Sin does not have to be the end of your service. We ought to have desires as a church. We want to see walls come crumbling down. In this passage, we find principles for restoration----1. Repent and remove sin--Useful service does not come till you deal with sin--2. Remember the promises and purposes of God--God repeats the promise in Joshua 8-1 -I have given...-. It sits in context of purpose. God had a purpose that they would take the land. God gives promises in light of his purposes. God's promises are given so His purposes are accomplished.--3. Reflect on God's disposition to us--Joshua 8-2 says -And ye shall take...- What if Achan had waited- It is a reminder that we need to have a right view of God. God is not miserly. He is disposed to be gracious toward us.--4. Resolve to live under authority of God--Joshua arose -Joshua 8-3- The doer of the word shall be blessed -James 1-25-.--5. Be responsible to take measures to see goals achieved--God told Joshua to lay an ambush. Joshua used his God-given reason to work out how to exactly do that -Joshua 8-3- and he was blessed by the sovereign hand of God

    Bible: John 9:25, 38
    Length: 43 min.

Overview: Physical illness or trials can sometimes be a sign of God's chastening hand. However, this is not always true. As God's people, we must be very careful about making dogmatic assertions about the purposes of God in the suffering that occurs. We might think we know with certainty why the storm has come, but we might be wrong. The man in these verses was not born blind because of sin. Rather, it was an occasion for his conversion to Christ. In this passage we learn the following-----1. God performed the miracles as an act of divine revelation--2. This revelation led to an act of personal confession

  • One But Many
A new MP3 sermon from Free Presbyterian Church of Malvern is now available on SermonAudio.com with the following details:

    Title: One But Many
    Subtitle: The Book of Joshua
    Speaker: Dr. Stephen Pollock
Broadcaster: Free Presbyterian Church of Malvern
    Event: Sunday - AM
    Date: 9/3/2017
    Bible: Joshua 7:24-26
    Length: 45 min.

Overview: There is much we can learn from Achan's sin. We see, covet, take and hide. It is the foolishness of man that thinks he can sin and hide from God. However Joshua 7 emphasizes not only Achin's personal sin but also the impact of that sin on the nation as a whole. The reason for defeat at Ai was because of Achan's sin -7-11-. The principle is that Achan's sin leads to God's wrath on the whole nation. How can one man's sin do this- In our world, we know so much about the 'me' but we neglect the 'we'. God said Israel sinned even though the passage shows Achan sinned. We are not denying individual responsibility. We learn here about corporate identity. God condemns the many for the sin of one. This principle echo's down through the course of time. We need to understand one and many -1 Cor 12-12-. We do not live for ourselves. We live in vital relationship to others. We live and obey and disobey in community. So in Achan's sin, we learn the following-----1. Corporate Identity--To live in isolation is to deny this principle. It is morally good for brethren to dwell together in unity. Paul wanted to join with the disciples when he was converted -Acts 9-26---2. Corporate Unity--Our identity is to govern our practice and actions. Pride and impatience brings division -Eph 4-1-3-. We should be humble and meek.--3. Corporate Responsibility--We are to live in obedience for the good of the body. An infection in one part of the body can affect the whole body. We are to not neglect the body but encourage it.--4. Corporate Purity--We are not to condone sin. Christ values purity. God is holy and will not admit sin. Joshua brought judgment to Achan but the greater Joshua brings salvation.

  • Judge and Hope of All the Earth

    Subtitle: Encounters with Christ
    Speaker: Dr. Stephen Pollock

    Event: Sunday - PM
    Date: 9/3/2017
    Bible: John 8:1-11
    Length: 41 min.

Overview: The Lord encounters a woman caught in adultery. This is not fiction. It is a real person that encounters a real Savior. The Bible is a book of real history. We have seen a variety of encounters -fishermen, a religious ruler, a Samaritan woman-. The background of the people vary but they all come to the same conclusion that Jesus is the Savior of sinners and they all commit their souls unto him. What does this event show us- We see the Lord in his role as Judge.----1. The infallible standard for judgment--There are many theories about what the Lord wrote. We don't know why he wrote or what he wrote. The action of writing convicts religious leaders. The Bible shows a number of places where God writes. In Exodus, we see tables of stone written with the finger of God. There is the hand that wrote of judgment in Daniel. There is law in scripture and the law written in our hearts -Rom 2-11,14-. We have to remind this world of God's standards.----2. The inescapable scope of judgment--Depravity affects us all and so also judgment----3. The intense scrutiny of the judgment--Why did they all leave- The religious leaders could have been guilty of adultery. The Lord might be showing that they did not follow the right procedure. Where is the man who committed adultery- The Lord made them realize they were guilty of spiritual adultery. The text tells us they were convicted by their own conscience.----4. The invaluable statement in the judgment--Neither do I condemn you. Go and sin no more. She is not getting off on a technicality. She is not condemned because Christ has taken her condemnation -Rom 5-18-19, 8-1-. We are seeing her conversion here and find hope for our adulterous hearts.

    Event: Sunday - AM
    Date: 8/20/2017
    Bible: Psalm 124
    Length: 48 min.

Overview: We can get discouraged and sad. But God can bring us back from the depths. Psalm 124 is a song of degrees. The Hebrew word speaks of going up. Three times a year, the Jews had to go up to Jerusalem to worship God. God knew that people would have their earthly problems and the Lord provides Psalm 124 to focus our hearts on His goodness and bring us to happiness.----1. The power of self--1a. we lack power -124-3---Something has to be stronger than you if you are to be swallowed up by it. Our power is inherently weak. Ecclesiastes 8-8 says no man has power in the day of death. We can't solve our temporal problems at times, much less our eternal problems. The spies all agreed there were giants in the land that were stronger than them. Only two of the spies understood God had the needed power.----1b. we lack discernment -124-7---Like a bird, we go into the net. We can't see the net before us. We lack discernment in the things of the Lord.----1c. we are unable to escape our pitiful condition -124-7---Christ told the Jews- How can you escape the damnation of hell-----2. power of Satan--2a. Satan's kingdom--If it had not been the Lord who was on our side. There are really only two sides- The Lord's side and Satan's side.----2b. Satan's craftiness--Satan wants to get you into the net. That is what he did to Adam and Eve. A woman who had no sin fell for Satan's craftiness. How much more are we in danger-----2c. Satan's goal -124-6- --His goal is to destroy your soul----3. power of the Savior--The Lord is on our side. The wisdom of God can get you out of the snare. His power is unparalleled. He made heaven and earth.----4. praise of the Savior -124-6---We bless the Lord for escape
