    Title: Achan's Sin
    Subtitle: The Book of Joshua
    Speaker: Dr. Stephen Pollock
Broadcaster: Free Presbyterian Church of Malvern
    Event: Sunday - AM
    Date: 8/13/2017
    Bible: Joshua 6-7
    Length: 41 min.

Overview: The city of Jericho has come under judgment of God. There are things God expects of His people in light of that judgment. One main thing is separation. Separation can be ecclesiastical but first and foremost it is personal. We separate from sin. This does not mean we separate from things that are legitimate. In this message, we look at the sin of Achan----1. The prohibition to sin--God gives a warning in the context of a shout for victory. It shows God values the people's obedience more than the victory. God's warning comes as a test. Will the people do what is right in the midst of temptation and triumph-----1a. the duty -Joshua 6-18----keep yourselves---There will be times of temptation. It comes as an enemy to our souls. The command comes to all people, young and old----1b, the danger -Joshua 6-18----lest you make yourselves accursed---If you do not keep yourselves from the things of the world, the danger is that they will become a snare. We have to guard our heart's affection so we would not be turned from the love of God.----2. The practice of sin -Joshua 7-21---We see the practice- he saw, he coveted, he took, and he hid. Eve saw fruit was good. Sin begins when we see something. Don't underestimate influence of eyes on the heart. Coveting is idolatry. It is loving something more than God -Heb 13-5-. Achan took something that should have been given to the Lord. We can steal from the Lord. Don't despise the talents the Lord has given you. He covered his sin. Sin leads to more sin.----3. The penalty for sin--Sin ends in death and ruin. God puts down markers at times. Achan shared in victory of Jericho but lost his soul. We are kept by power of God but don't be careless

    Bible: Joshua 6:1-21

Overview: This world lives by and large like there is no God. We too must battle this mindset and be reminded that there is a God who intervenes in this world to accomplish His plans and purposes. In this passage from Joshua, we see the true God intervening and coming to His people with promises and precepts----God gives promises----1. God has the power to make promises--This is a promise of full victory. God's people seem to have an impossible task to perform. Nothing is too hard for the Lord. Perhaps your are at a point in your life when you think it is too hard for the Lord to act in your situation. God's power is such that he can give remarkable promises and miraculously keep them.--2. God has the right to make promises--For God to give something means it is His to begin with. God could give Jericho because it was His to give--3. Our response to these promises--God uses means of our faith to fulfill these promises. Faith rests in God's trustworthiness and reliability----God gives precepts----1. God requires full obedience--The walls come down by faith. The faith is seen in the action of their obedience. They were to put feet to their faith and march around the city. They were not to sit in their tents and look out at the walls waiting for them to fall.--2. God requires persistent obedience--The Israelites had to walk around each day. They had no visible results for days on end.--3. God requires specific obedience--The people were to shout as an expression of their faith. It was the final show that God had given them the victory even though the walls were still up. The people's faith was centered not in the ark itself but on the presence and power of God that it represented.

    Subtitle: Encounters with Christ

    Event: Sunday - PM
    Date: 8/6/2017
    Bible: John 4:1-26
    Length: 39 min.

Overview: True worship is vital. God's goal in redemption is to create a company of true worshippers. A company may be saved, but they are still saved one by one. His hour is the hour of creating true worshipers, even from the Samaritans that the Jews despised. There is much in this portion of Scripture to instruct us in seeking souls.----1. The freeness of the gospel--No matter the background of individuals, the Lord is desirous to bring them to himself. This woman comes but he initiates the encounter. We must be prepared to speak to people. The Lord converses with a Samaritan and a woman. This was not the norm. Christ wanted her saved and converted. The gospel is offered to all men without distinction. It is not that you must be like this, this, and this and then you can hear the gospel. We are not God's insurance agents with the right to write others off.----2. The focus of the gospel--The focus is the glory of God, but God glorifies himself as he saves sinners. The Lord performs open heart surgery. He takes the scalpel of truth and opens up her heart so she can see her true need. Sin blinds the sinner to the truth that this world cannot satisfy. The Lord shows her immorality. The immorality of this woman is clear for all to see. Your immorality may be hidden. He shows her the idolatry she has. You have to recognize that you are an idolater if you don't worship he true God.----3. The fullness of the gospel--The Lord proclaims himself to be the solution to her problems. She met this man as a weary traveler looking for water, yet she found the true and omniscient God. Christ created a thirst for peace, pardon, provision, and a person who could give her the waters of life eternal

    Event: Sunday - AM
    Date: 7/23/2017
    Bible: Joshua 5:13-15
    Length: 49 min.

Overview: The Book of Joshua is showing God bringing his promises to pass, promises made to Abraham many years earlier. But these promises are made and kept in the context of warfare. We face a warfare against the world, the flesh, and the devil. This warfare is a time of fear and opportunity. In the midst of this warfare, a visitor comes to Joshua. If God's people are to go forth in the warfare seen in Joshua 6, we need to understand the person who comes in Joshua 5----1. The person in this coming--1a. identity--He is a divine person. Joshua worships and the worship is accepted. This person gives a request that is consistent with his divine identity. Taking shoes off was a cultural manifestation of reverence.--1b. humility--He comes in the form of a man. This captain comes in a form that is not intended to provoke fear. This was a pre-incarnate appearance of Christ--1c. authority--He comes as a captain to take charge. The question is not what side the Lord is on, but whose side we are on----2. The purposes of this coming--2a. He comes with a weapon--His sword is drawn. He is coming to lead them to victory.--2b. He comes with a word--He is coming to give the promise of His blessing in the battle----Lessons--1. God is showing us what he will do in the future--2. Worship comes before warfare

    Subtitle: Encounters with Christ
    Speaker: Dr. Stephen Pollock
Broadcaster: Free Presbyterian Church of Malvern
    Event: Sunday - PM
    Date: 7/16/2017
    Bible: John 1:41
    Length: 38 min.

Overview: The gospel of John gives the reason for the book- that those who do not believe would come to believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and be saved from their sins, delivered from death and have life in his name -20-31-. John presents not just miracles but also encounters with individuals to prove his thesis. We see Nicodemus and the woman at the well. In every single encounter, we are brought to see that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. In particular, we are looking at the conversion of Andrew and Simon. What do these encounters teach us about Christ-----1. We find a Christ that comes--Christ is the promised Savior. He comes willingly as the Lamb of God. We cannot pander to man's depravity in the preaching of God's Word. He is the one who fulfilled all the types and shadows of the OT. We think of the Lamb of God in Genesis 22 and the scapegoat in Leviticus. There is a Lamb not just for Israel but also for the Gentile.----2. We find a Christ who provokes confession---We have found the Messiah...- Andrew believed the word he heard about Christ. Conversion produces a spirit of humble learning. These are words spoken in great delight. Christ is the pearl of great price.----3. We find a Christ that invites communion---What seek ye-- This is a test of their motivation. There is a faith that is not saving faith. There are people that are moved by the miracles but have no affection for his person. Andrew and Simon became so convinced of who he was that they wanted to dwell and commune with him. He is a conquering Redeemer who invites his people to dwell with Him.----4. We find a Christ that sovereignly changes sinners

    Title: Back to the Basics
    Subtitle: The Book of Joshua
    Speaker: Dr. Stephen Pollock
Broadcaster: Free Presbyterian Church of Malvern
    Event: Sunday - AM
    Date: 7/16/2017
    Bible: Joshua 5
    Length: 38 min.

Overview: In our walk with God, it is good to return to the basics and be reminded of who we are and what God has done. This is what we have in the fifth chapter of Joshua.----In this passage, three main events are presented----1. The procedure -Joshua 5-2-3---The procedure was circumcision. It was a sign- the people belonged to God and they were marked for blessing -Genesis 17-11-. It had a spiritual meaning- moral renewal and the new birth----2. The passover -Joshua 5-10---Its purpose was to remember -Ex 12-24, 27-. It was a celebration for a redeemed community -Ex 12- 43-44-.----3. The provision -Joshua 5-12---They ate of old corn of the land. Ordinary provision is an evidence of God's care. Look for the miraculous and you may forget the wonder of the ordinary.----In these events, God's people are being reminded-----1. Reminded of their identity--They are the Lord's people by election. They are His by redemption -a blood bought people-. The giants cannot overcome us.----2. Reminded of their community--The people of God came together to partake of the passover. We are not fighting battles alone. We are a company of God's people. Israel defeated giants together.----3. Reminded of their responsibility--They are reminded to walk by faith. Those who came out of Egypt had the sign but no substance. You might think you stand but take head that you do not fall.----4. Reminded of their opportunity--God says- Walk with me and I will take care of you. Far too often, the people of God look too far down the line. Do what is right and leave the consequences with God. Our opportunity is to walk with God and watch him take care of us. Our encouragement is that the God of heaven is our God.
