While the Conservatives led the way in Quebec during the 19th century, the early 20th century would see the beginning of the Liberal dynasty that would rule Quebec for nearly four decades. The first Black Canadian to serve as Governor General, the start of her term was rocky over accusations that she and her husband supported Quebec separatism. As time went on, she would prove her detractors wrong, becoming a celebrated and respected vice-regal.

Adrienne Clarkson is considered to be one of the top Governors General since the 1950s, bringing new vitality into the post. While she received criticism at various times for her spending, she was widely respected and even received a military send-off when her term came to an end. No other Governor General received such an honour.

Serving as Governor General from 1995 to 1999, Romeo LeBlanc opened up Rideau Hall to the public more than any previous Governor General, resulting in a tripling of visitors to the property. He was also the first person of Acadian descent, the first former Senator and the first former member of the Parliamentary Press Bureau to serve as Governor General.

Ray Hnatyshyn was the son of the first Ukrainian-born Senator in Canadian history. After a career in politics, Hnatyshyn made history himself as the first Governor General of Ukrainian-descent. As Governor General, he was known for his friendly and humorous personality and he would open the doors to Rideau Hall and help make the position of Governor General more accessible to Canadians.

Jeanne Sauve was a woman of firsts. The first Quebec woman to have a federal cabinet post, the first female Speaker of the House and the first female Governor General, she broke barriers throughout her life and overall was well-loved as Governor General. There would be hiccups along the way, but her impact on Canada cannot be understated.

The first Governor General from Manitoba, he was the youngest premier in Manitoba's history & the third youngest Governor General ever.
