The A’s returned from the All-Star Break hoping to flip the script in Cleveland, but it was more of the same against Slade Cecconi. The Guardians’ righty, who shut out the A’s back in June, nearly went the distance again—carving through the lineup with ease for eight dominant innings. Meanwhile, JP Sears got knocked around early, highlighted by Jonathan Rodriguez’s first career homer and some sloppy defense, including a costly mental lapse by Tyler Soderstrom that gifted José Ramírez an extra base. By the time Cleveland built up a 7-0 lead, this one looked like a wrap. 

But the A’s didn’t go down quietly. Homers by Brent Rooker and Shea Langeliers in the middle innings chipped away, and a wild 9th inning saw the A's score three runs—including an RBI double by Miguel Andujar off Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase. With the tying run at the plate, Max Muncy and Gio Urshela each struck out to end the rally—and the game. Final score: Guardians 8, A’s 6. A tale of two offenses—one asleep for eight innings, the other barely hanging on.
