  • 65 - Lincoln’s Lyceum Address and the Importance of Passing Down Tradition

In this episode, I offer reflections on Lincoln’s Lyceum Address (also titled The Perpetuation of our Political Institutions) as well as provide a reading of the speech. Lincoln’s Lyceum Address was given in 1838, well before his time of fame as president, to a young men’s association in Illinois. He emphasizes the dangers we face as Americans from mob rule and a general disregard for law. Lincoln reflects upon their unique position in history in relation to the American Revolution and the necessary steps to preserve our political institutions in the future.

  • 62 - Os Guinness on America’s Cultural Revolution and the Privatization of Christianity

In his latest book, Zero Hour America, Os Guinness deals with the urgency of our time. From IVPress - “Revolution? Oligarchy? Or homecoming? Americans are approaching a "zero hour" for the republic and its distinctive view of ordered freedom. America is caught between two revolutions and alternately suppresses and squanders freedom with a prodigal carelessness, with little understanding of the responsibilities that freedom requires.

Os Guinness warns that if America abandons its distinctive ideals and ideas, we will have carved into the chronicles of history yet another example of the failure of a free society. Like other crucial times in world history, the present crisis is a "civilizational moment" and also a pivot point that could lead to national renewal. Outlining seven key foundation stones of freedom, Guinness lays out a pathway for defining and ordering freedom, righting national wrongs, and passing freedom's baton from generation to generation.

Human freedom is precious and rare, and citizens who prize it must do what it takes to renew and sustain societies that are free for all of their members. America's window of opportunity is brief, and the alternative to renewal is bleak. The present moment must not be missed.”

We dive into the topics of freedom, cultural marxism, revolution, the sexual revolution, Christian nationalism, and how Christians can remain faithful today. We explore the differences between the American and French Revolution and how the freedom pursued in America has been explicitly biblical.

“Freedom is the power to do what you ought.”

“Uninstructed life is not worth living.”

  • 60 - Troy Frasier on Learning from Sermons in Church History and Evangelizing the Nations

Troy is one of the co-founders of Revived Studios, the co-host for Revived Thoughts. He received his Master of Theological Studies from Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Revived Studios produces podcasts to bring figures, stories, sermons, etc. from church history. Revived Studios produces Revived Devos, Martyrs & Missionaries, Revived Thoughts, and Revived Radio.

In this episode we discuss why it is helpful to listen to sermons from the past. Sermons from church history can be a powerful means of growing in godliness. We have 2000 years of church history which includes 2000 years of sermons from faithful pastors. On his show Revived Thoughts, you can find sermons from the past read for us today.  We also discuss the work of William Carey and Jonathan Edwards to gain a better understanding of gospel preaching and cultural engagement today.

Bio: Troy Frasier is one of the co-founders of Revived Studios, the co-host for Revived Thoughts. After Troy pitched the idea of Revived Thoughts to Joel in November of 2017, they began designing, recording, and producing the show. Although it would be a year and a half before Revived Thoughts officially launched, it would fill a need to help bring church history back to life. Within a year they had launched Revived Devos, with host Nathaniel.

Since then Elise joined the studio with Revived Radio. She also envisioned a show focusing on the lives and sacrifices of martyrs and missionaries, that became the basis of her show aptly named, Martyrs and Missionaries. Revived Studios exists to bring Church History into the ears and hearts of believers everywhere!
